I'd like some VERY honest and blunt opinions on my band and the future of my band. The quality of the songs are fairly crude but thats not what i need to know about. Do the songs show any potention for a real corrier making music. It might take a bit of work i know but im prepared to put in the effort. I just want to know if you guys think it would be a waste and maybe i should not take my music so seriously. It might be better to hear from people who like the alternate rock thing but any opinion would help. My band has only just re formed and i've started finalizing a lot of new songs with the singer/ co -writer. In a months of two im hoping to look for a bass player and drumer and a cuople of months after that i'd like to start playing and working on a demo CD/EP to start looking for interest. Dont hold back to spare any feelings.
A few of my bands songs can be found at :

Is anyone out there? Please take the time to listen to the songs. I'm very anxious to hear what you people think. Do they have real commercial potential (the songs not the recordings)? By this I’m not talking top 40, although that would be okay but more within the alternative (who really knows what that is anymore?) music scene. If you were a record company executive would you consider signing me? If not some feedback so to why not would be helpful.

Hey Cold ash,

checked out your stuff. Out of controle song seems like it can go somewhere.... I like the music so far.....Foolish me is in dire need of drums but the melody is ok..... Not my genre of music so I really can't give you expert advice, but I thought the market for alternative rock died out?

Thanks for the response
Out of controle is just what ive done with my pod and home studio. Foolish my is realy just a balard hense there's no drums or electric guitar. I guess the market for atlernative music isnt what it was but its still fairly big here in Australia. I'd realy love to hear from people who listen to this kind of music, my 'potential market'.
And if you think it sucks tell me, i'll tell you if i think your songs suck.

Hey C-Ash, I'm listening to Anything or Everything right now. Pretty good. I'd say the vocals need a little more work (I'm talking performance-wise, not recording-wise), but you probably know that. Out of Controle seems like it has some potential too. Keep it up.

Cheers Woopysnorp. Yeah im a bit worried about the vocalasts talent he's improved a little since then but i dont think he's great. He more than makes up for it in is guitar and ong writing abilities but i might need to look for another singer. There's acouple more songs with him singing (Decal and Foolish Me). Have a listen to them if you can and tell me if you think i need a new singer for commercial succsess

What do you guys think is the best song of the ones on there?

I checked it out. Hmmm, let me think of how to say this:

The stuff is good, shows some talent. What is wrong is the goal, and the thought process. Even the title of the thread, Potential for Greatness?
Commercial Success in the Biz depends on lots of stuff, not just Music. A record company exec is not gonna sign you by listening to a demo Mp3 on a BBS.

What I am trying to say: Concentrate on making your music the best it can be. Talking about Record exec's and top 40 radio is futile at this moment.

You want blunt, here it is: there are 10 million people in the world who can do the same thing. Getting into the biz takes some luck, and a lot of work
. It might take a bit of work i know but im prepared to put in the effort
Actually, it is gonna take a LOT of work. It is one of the hardest professions to get into, 99% will fail.

I'll be blunt and honest, as requested. first off...seems like you're begging quite a bit for people to listen, and got impatient after only a short while when no one responded to your initial post. chill dude.. On the music..YOU have to believe in your music also...and not worry about what other people think...at least in my opinion. Your also asking if whether we can pick a "diamond out of the rough"...and if you should continue in your quest. If that is what you want to do...I'd say, without hesitation. Your music is good, but has a LONG way to go before it is presentable, with such stiff competition nowadays. I listened to "Decal" and "Anything and Everything". Both songs seem to fit your genre, but also seem very dated to me. The vocals are also weak and need a personality. The music is too easy to play and record, to call it inspirational, but recorded GREAT could back up a unique vocal. Keep hackin' at it dude, and trust your feelings first....and watch the tinny guitar sounds;)

oh...and as far as commercial success. I'm about convinced that it takes more than good music at this point in the music biz. Talent will go a loooong way, but it isn't the solution by itself.

Decal seems to me to be the best as far as the type to have a wider commercial appeal. I liked Foolish Me as a tune but it's a little weak in its arrangment. The tunes are pretty good.
I understand you just want opinions on the tunes, not the recordings but they all could stand some work. Singer is a bit off here and there. In the pro world that wouldn't fly.

Damn, David...what were YOU thinking JUST before I hit "submit reply'??? you beat me out...turkey!!!!:p

Yes, great minds think alike.

Track rat is very Correct about "In the pro world that wouldn't fly." This even goes for demos. If you are a songwriter and want someone to sing your tune, you still have to have an extremely high-quality demo. Lets face it, with SONAR and LOGIC software, it is very possible to make an amazing demo for cheap.

My advice: Check out a lot of the MP3s here in this forum. THESE are just some of the people you are "competing"with. I have heard some mighty fine stuff here, and the people still have "Day Jobs". Best of luck.

Thanks to everone for thiere replies. Okay i'll admit that the suject potential for greatness was a bit much but i thought it might help to get attention, and it did. I know you cant realy say if i'll make it or not based on a few MP3s but i can hardly take to you a live show so it was the best i could do. I was just looking for an opinion on the quality of the song writing. Those songs are all around two years old so hopefuly my songwriting's gotten better since then. I do agree the vocals need quite a bit of work maybe a new vocalist will be needed if i want to go anywhere. I know the road ahead of me will be very long and very tough but im willing to give it my best and more.

sorry, you asked foir bluntness:

I would turn the channel if these songs came on on mtv. I constantly do that cos theres a lot of lackluster and sometimes downright bad music on MTV.

Anyhow, I listened to the three songs and non of them has a part that I can remember. It quite mediocre or even worse than mediocre.

I am not telling you this so that you'll put down your guitar and sell all your recording equipment. I am telling you so that you'll realize that its a process. If you learn something new everyday you will soon be a formidable singer/songwriter. If you practice and get better everyday ,you will become a force to be reckoned with.

Hey man... I think I have just what you're lookin' fer... forget all that "be true to yourself/the music" garbage... I understand what you want. You need to know if you've got any hits on your hands, or if you've got material that will please a crowd in general... you wanna know if one of these songs will be the next big deal on mainstream radio... or if you'll be the next big local act.

And I'm just the guy to tell ya...

(muuahahahahaaa!)

So let's get down to the nitty-gritty... :p

Out of Control: First off... there's no way to tell about this song, because it has no vocals. The vocals are THEE most important part of a good song... it you can't sing along, or if it isn't a melody that sticks in your head all day long until you want to scoop your brains out with a spoon because you can't stop HUMMING THE DAMN TUNE!!! then it's not gonna be a hit. So, that said, I have no way of telling about this one. But I can tell you that that VERY annoying lead guitar riff has GOT to go. Oh my lord, that thing grated on me before the first time I heard it had even ended. And the chord progressions are nothing to write home aboot... Both the verse and the chorus are very typical chord progressions that have been done to DEATH in alt. rock, so unless you find a unique lead/accompaniment guitar riff to lay over them to drown them out, it will sound very boring.

Foolish Me: Um.. no. As someone before said,.. very dated. This sounds like something Skid Row's producer wouldn't let them put on one of their albums because no amount of production in the world would help it. (Well... ok.. maybe not THAT bad) :) But it is rather mediocre.

Decal: This sounds less like alternative and more like retro. Almost "Strokes"ish. And while I can't stand the Strokes, I must admit that their style is becoming fairly popular. This one would fly, if done a tad more aggressively, (with that 60's yell thing goin' on) as a kind of party-until-you-fall-down type of good-time-rock-n-roll thing.

Anything or Everything: Uh.. you know... absolutely nothing struck me aboot this song. It was pretty repetitive and unremarkable... except for that break right before the lead guitar.... that wasn't too bad... but after that it went back to being mundane... sorry. :p

So.. in summation... if these came on the radio, I would turn the channel with sound-barrier-breaking speed... but hey... (now I must insert the obligatory word of patronizing encouragement) if you enjoy making it, then that's all that matters... right?

:D

WATYF

(man I love it when people beg for blunt critiques) :)

hEY Cold dude....turn off the thing in your NWR settings that prevents non-members from downloading your songs and i'll take a listen......

I can't listen...cause I can't find my damn password to the site and I can't have them email it to me because the email I registered under is no longer valid

Waldo are you around here........Am I retarded or something? Does this mean I have to re-register?

I can change the e-mail address for you, just give me a valid one and I'll do it ASAP.

The only advice I can offer is continue to work on your melodies. Those are what a listener will remember long after they've forgotten your name.

Any suggestions of how to make the arrangment better?

You guys dont suck so bad we have to tell you to go to hell but right now it sounds like standard garage band stuff. The timing is decent which is more than I can say for a lot of recordings I seem to hear around here. The singer is a bit flat and the songs didnt really grab me.

Keep at it though. Try to write some better songs and do some MUCH higher quality recordings. Get your singer to do some extra takes or double the vocals to hide the pitch problems a little better. You guys will be the new Green Day in no time (cough) ;)
