Lost Cause
Just wanted to say to those who have posted a clutch of lyrics only recently, and have not got a lot of response. I think this is because it's very difficult to respond to lyrics without the music to put them in context, to see how they work musically. I'm not for a second suggesting what people should or should not post, just trying to explain why, it seems to me, they are not getting responses.

FWIW I feel that even rough old 2 or 4 track type demo's still have value when the material is strong, perhaps people should feel it's OK to put links to stuff here that would have a hard time in the clinic if they are just exploring musical ideas (yeah , I know I just did that  ). Anyway, it's only a thought.

Point taken Garry,
Ya ever visited JPF? Where lyrics need to stand on their own, regardless of music? It was the first songwriter site that I ever visited. And, it re-iterated that it's a b*#*h to try to frame a hip roof on an out of square foundation.
Good post,
Bill

lol!
Thousands of songs that will never be recorded are there for sure...

actually....what you need to do at the JPF lyric forums is to actively review other's work....this facilitates responses to your own threads....just like anywhere else...

it's tit for tat ......ya know?

Joe

Mornin Joe,
Yup. I know exactly what you mean. What goes around comes around.
And yup. Lot's of songs that won't ever be heard.
What I apparently didn't do a very good job of saying is...I used to think that lyrics don't need to say something, they just need to sound like they say something. I've changed my mind. They need to touch somebody, somewhere. As much as I couldn't stand George Castanza (sp?) on the Sienfeld show, I have to give him his props. He elicitted a response. Good art. I should be so lucky. But, after all,
what do I know?

Evenin' Bill :D

Yup...I agree...

tunes gotta have a story...

But, I suck at lyrics so.......what the hell do I know anyways.. :D

I almost never critique lyrics alone. That is not a song. Lyrics alone IMO don't convey the whole song. There are songs that are lyrical masterpieces, but the melody is still needed to drive home the full emotion of the song. There are songs that are hits that rely mostly on the music/groove. Could you imagine critiquing Louie Louie on lyics alone LOL

Jagular - that was my point. You put it so much more eloquently :)

as a music maker and less of a lyrics writer....I've rarely ever let someone see the lyrics unless i have music to them...on the flipside to that....i can have an unfinished piece of music and let almost anyone hear it. alot of times i think my lyrics suck.....i even put a password on the folder of lyrics on my computer to keep out any curious passerbys that are in my place when I'm not there.....i live with 2 other people and the house is a revolving door
