I really like the bassline.Whats it played on?

Bass guitar is actually a Roland JV-1010 patch. I adjusted the EQ to make it mostly low end, it helps disguise the fact that it's ROMpler somewhat. One of these years I'll get an actual bass and try and learn it... one of these days...

This one is a couple years old already, but it was fun for us to make because of the tape effects. Apart from a smidgeon of spring reverb on the vox (too little reverb I'd say in retrospect) the tape manipulations are the only effects:

Very well done. The fx are cool.

Hey thanks for the kind words Dodge!
I have fond memories recording that one cuz it was the first thing we ever did on the MS16.
Also, my girlfriend imposed a sort of 'oblique strategy' on the backwards tracks where there was a 'one-take-no-chance-to-rehearse' rule. Very fun for us to do but hopefully not insufferably self indulgent.

Well.....Here is a nasty sounding recording I did on my Tascam 388.
Its my first one downloaded to computer.I just went straight out from the 388 into a tascam 700 CD/RW recorder. Then I loaded the CD into the computer and converted into a mp3.No editing computer wise.Im new to all this kind of converting files and such.So im not sure I did everything correct.

Its an original song I wrote and played all instruments.....not too great though.
Lots of background noise, distorted vocals were deliberate, sloppy drumming.etc...
I just wanted to see if I could get it on the computer to this site,so when I get some better recordings down,I'll know what to do.
Also, upon listening back to the downloaded track on soundcloud,it sounds way more muddy and compressed than it does when listening on my stereo.Especially the drums.

Please, cut this song up,criticize, tell me it sucks.I want feed back on what I could do better. There will be no offence taken.
The song is called "The finest hour" by jason harvey

sounds good to me... love the song as well!

Sounds like you got a bit of digital clipping (especially when you hit the crash), could mean that your input level on the CDRW recorder was a bit too high.

Thanks for the comment Chill.

Yup...I noticed the clipping too.Pretty nasty.Im still trying to get the perfect level with this CD recorder. When I set the level to where its
not going into the red on the CD/R,the playback of the CD is to quiet for me.I'll listen to it in my car and have to crank'er up.Then when I put the radio back on....Kaboom!!!.
Still learnin'

Thanks again.
J.

Yes that's because the radio and professional mixes in general use a lot of compression and limiting on the final track so they can make the final mix sound as loud as it does. It is not as simple as turning up the gain.

you need some compression going into the cd recorder. That way you wont be cramming the meters on it and getting the clipping. Even a cheap one would be better then the digital clipping your getting.

Herm.
I actually did put the mix through 2 dbx 163x comps before giong into the CD/RW.Maybe not the best choice of compressors for this, but Im just experimenting. Is there any "special" setting for a compressor when doing this?
Im still learning with compressors and all that.
I ran the mix through it and it was reading about 3-6db reduction I guess. Then I turned up the comp. output to raise the volume a little.
The meters on the CD/RW were still going into the red at times.I find if they dont go into the red and clip a little,I'll play the cd back and the volume is still low.Even if the level is constantly just below clipping.

I have done alot of my recording on reel to reels...Had a 3340S that I should have never sold!Any of you guys remember goin in the big studios and seeing the 2 " tape on Ampex 16 track machines???I think these 2 " transports were also used in tv stations as video recorders back in their days.Of course the video machines had spinning heads on them.I used to record in 2 studios that had 2 of the 16 trackers tied together for a whopping 32 tracks. That was the latest thing back in their day.

I agree -- good thing is I found my phantom power box. I was able to get a higher end condenser mic as OH and in limited tests it's made a bigger difference over the battery powered Sony ECM23 mic, which just has that 'spitty' taste to it.

Thing about the Model 5 console is the EQ isn't that usable. Plus/minus 3db is about the limit. In fact, high end seems to just add distortion. Somehow I don't mind the extra crunch from time to time...

I'm looking for an analog TV recording of the AC Ryan Playon device (say about 1 or 2 minutes in length, in .mpg format), which I can put on an USB stick to check if this recording can be played on an DVD player with USB input, like these models from Philips for example:

I recorded in different quality settings so you can also check the video quality at different settings. Basically 3 settings record at 720x576 with different compression ratios for quality-filesize, and 2 settings record at 352x576 for even smaller file sizes.

We'll post more video recording samples (analog, digital etc) and write about it in a blog post on the PlayonDVR blog later this week. We've been wanting to write more blog articles - I believe this makes an a good topic.
