Hi
I was wandering if it is in any way possible to manipulate the sound of the Yamaha DX7 live or in real time?
Perhaps with an external midi-controller?

Only if you want to add modulation effects via Modulation Wheel, Aftertouch or Breath Controller.

Yo SHTJ:

What do you want to "manipulate" on the DX7? I still have my DX7 and, for its time, a wonderful synth. I was fortunate to get "extra" patches for the DX7 and I have a pretty good piano patch for that synth.

You can go into each patch and mess with the algorithms and this will give you different sounds from the basic patch. Read the manual. Buy any of the many additional manuals/tapes/videos and you will find out the limits of what you can manipulate on the DX7. For its time, it was the best.

But, today, the patches are so much better....and depending on what synth you buy, mess with the patches a great deal, change the reverb, depth, bass, treble, etc. etc. etc.

Yup, you could get yourself FM7 :D

FM8 would be better. Tons of realtime manipulation including morphing between 4 sounds.

Or get a Motif and get the DX expansion board !

:D

What could be sweeter?

Cheers !

It was actually the FM7 that got me hooked on the idea of getting a DX7.
But i guess there is no way of manipulating the patches real-time, thats a shame.

Sure you can, you just need to use a controller instead of the DX keyboard, one with assignable sliders and/or knobs. My old KX-88 was great for that - I used it with a pair of TX-7's, the module equivalents of a DX-7 - and had several presets assigning sliders to different sysex parms. It could go pretty deep.

Nice. So something like fx. Behringer BCR 2000? (i don´t know if its good or anything - i only mean to ask if thats the kind of thing im looking for).
- How can i know if its assignable?

PS: Maybe this thread should be moved to Midi Mania

The only reason I suggested FM7 is because it's much closer to DX7. FM8 is a completely different instrument IMO.

Not true. FM8 has every FM7 preset and loads all Yamaha FM series sounds just like FM7.

Editing is the same (6-operator plus X and Z operators).
