Functionally obsessed.
Hey folks,

I've been feeling really good today. Did a ton of cooking and cleaning, and just taking care of things. I saw this video clip and I want to share it with everyone here who is just starting out, or who has been working in music production / recording for some time. The message isn't necessarily about music or recording, or about fixing gear, but everyone can relate to the sentiments in this video.

I know I could have posted this somewhere else, but I don't go into the other forums.

Anyway, here goes:

[video=youtube;<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/-hidvElQ0xE&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/-hidvElQ0xE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>]video[/video]

Replace the words "TV" and "Video" with "music" or "recording" :)

I quickly eluded my horridly whiny state of mind from late last week when I felt like throwing in the towel...

  • My 388 is in the home stretch of its low-level refurb
  • Got the supply motor out of the MM-1000 to get the new reel cork on it and fix the brake band
  • Tried out my Tascam BR-20T for the first time and it has been a gem-in-waiting it seems...
  • Polished one of the horse saddles that we got for cheap ($35) and it is unbelievable what was waiting under all that dust and a bit of mold...beautiful
  • Got a couple home-improvement projects accomplished too.

Yup.

There'd be no good without the bad, but its nice when the bad lasts just long enough to remind you what good is...things could be...SO much worse.

Hey that was really cool Lo Fi. Thanks man. Good luck with all of your work. I hope you do well.

Thanks everyone :) Enjoy the message.

I've been doing a lot of reflecting lately. I suppose that most people do this around my age: "Where did I come from, where have I been, where am I now, and where am I going?" That sort of thing.

Specifically, as it pertains to music, it's sometimes hard to reconcile how much money and time I've spent on all of this equipment against how "good" I perceive myself to be at using it, and at making music in general. I think the key to success is knowing when the material you're producing isn't as good as you want it to be. It's important because it allows pause for reflection, and for one to take inventory of his desires and ambition. Knowing that you're not where you want to be should be as much a driving force to realize your dreams as was the initial impulse which led you to take this path.

Don't ever become discouraged. It's OK to be disappointed with a project, or to feel bummed out about several projects. It's more important to learn from what happened, and to be a little "smarter" when the next project comes. And always look back at where you've been: You will see your progress and how much you have already achieved, and from there you can visualize your trajectory toward bigger, better accomplishments.

And, it's always OK to take a break and think things through :)

Jeff,

Thanks for linking that up...I was on a mobile device earlier without the bandwidth to watch the clip.

Notice that he just beats on himself over his performance from age 27, but he isn't taking himself too seriously either. He has the wisdom at this stage in his life to be critical of his past without detriment to his current station and in fact use his self-criticism as a means to help others. That takes time too.

I'm about 20 years in to this pursuit and its almost always been very back seat except suring college when I was playing *all* the time whether it was in local bands or as a part of the music program and since college it has been moonlight, but there is still this drive to narrow that gap between taste and the results of efforts. Three years ago was when that pursuit, my taste, steered me back into analog and that's what it is...taste...personal taste and I'm glad there are others with similar tastes.

Thanks for the big picture. That's really important, as well as having fun along the way and bringing others into that fun.
