Position 2 on a Strat...

Technically? There is no technical reason to call that switch position anything other than something like "neck + middle", which describes what it actually is. I think what you mean is "conventionally", and I have seen both conventions (one calling it position 2 and one calling it position 4) used.

well....like Light posted, Fender calls it "4", so that's "gospel" enough for me. hence, "technically".

"conventionally", according to fender, calling neck and middle "2" is technically wrong. :p

technically, conventionally, semantically, whatever. :p

FWIW, it's "4" to me as well, but as you see from this thread, "4" means bridge+middle to a lot of folks. But that, technically, is a convention. ;^)
 
I have a cheap strat copy I'm lucky to have stay in tune for long, so I'm sure the pickups aren't anything special, but I like mine on 2 and 4 too and not just for the noise cancellation. I think both of them sound more woody or depthy or some other vague word I can't describe well. Single pickup positions to me sound too electrical. I know it's silly sounding since its an electric guitar its supposed to sound electrical, but I feel the doubled pickups add something more natural to its sound. I have no idea why, I just know what sounds better.

Its funny - two years + later and I've started to really embrace this philosophy. Since I got a little into SRV I've been camped way up in the neck position with a small valve amp and a touch of compression. It's a loose, almsot glassy tone. Love it!
 
I find it varies a lot depending on the amp and the strat.
First off ..... personally, I find that different strats can sound dramatically different. You wouldn't think so since they're all basically the same thing but some strats sounds a LOT 'strat-ier' than others. And amps react very differently to a strats single coils than to humbuckers.

For me ..... the neck and middle and the in-between are usually the way to go but I have played strats where I found the bridge p'up to be killer.
I have two strats but one has a pair of EMG 'buckers in it so that doesn't count and the other has the 'elite' switching set-up in it so I have some extra possibilities I use a lot that a normal strat doesn't offer.
I tend to prefer strats to pauls but right now pretty much only play my Stinnett.

Bridge or middle for me. I never go inbetween and hate the neck pickup.

I don't play wanky bluesy "expressive" crap though. I just rock.
 
I installed a small toggle switch that kicks the bridge pickup in for the 4th and 5th positions and can have all three pickups working or the bridge/neck pickup togeather. It makes for a very interesting variation of sounds and doesn't change the original configuration if I don't want it. I have found that it makes for a pretty unique lead tone without cutting or hurting the ear. I did this on my Hondo strat copy with emg's as well and it works really well for both guitars. Click it off and you're back to normal.
 
On a clean-sounding Strat, I like just the neck pickup. Anything else is crap.
 
I like position the neck position and the bridge position. I rarely stray in between.
 
Middle position with the tbx tone at about 3, with mic positioned at the edge of the speaker.
