Hey, I am new to analog recording and recording in general. I've read through the manual for the tascam porta one but I still have one question. Would it be possible to plug my guitar amp into one of the line ports without shorting anything out?

Or is my only option to either plug my guitar directly in or mic the amp?

Thanks,

If your guitar amp has a line out jack as apposed to a speaker out jack, then yes, you could connect it that way.

But, the more traditional method of tracking electric guitars is to use a microphone close up to the guitar amp's speaker cabinet so that way you're capuring all of the "flavor" of the amp's sound.

Another way of doing it is to get something called a "direct box" which allows you to get a better electrical match up between an electric guitar and the line input on your Portastudio while also sending your guitar onto your guitar amp where you can then do a mix of the dry direct box sound and the amp's sound. Some find this useful...some don't.

The one thing you don't want to do is plug the guitar amp's speaker out into the Portastudio though as that will blow up the channel its plugged into if the volume is turned up too high on the guitar amp. And basically anything over 1 on the amp's volume control will be too powerful. Best best is not to play with that kind of fire.

Cheers! :)

....

If it has a Line Out or Headphone Out, you can use those for connecting to the Porta One.

:spank::eek:;)
