does anyone know how people go about recording these pop songs these days for people like britney spears or justin timberlake, etc... it seems like just a bunch of random loops... but they must know what they are doing.

It's called buying songs from great songwriters and hiring session musicians to play the parts, and getting some hot synth/sampler/remixer dude to loop and mangle things.

Oh yeah... and Antares auto tune or TC Voice Prism on the vocals so they are in pitch. Also to make them sound 'beefier', drown with a few 2 and 3 part harmonies (automatically generated on your pitch shifter) and add a ton of reverb and you're all set.

Optionally you can aim for the Ricky Martin/Latino percussion overdubs from hell.

I know somebody that is a producer and does some pop stars. It seems he uses a Motif and runs it into the SSL then to Pro Tools HD. That will get most of the song. He also has a couple booths for vocals and maybe a few live insturments.
