Pop Filter Alternative ?

I think I'm hearing my voice losing its guts and its midrange when I use a pop filter for my condenser mic. With MY voice this is the last thing I need....

I have tested this alot . I don't think I'm imagining it. ! ?
(Could I be ?)

I have an MXL V67 condenser mic. I am satisfied with its sound without a filter.

Is there an alternative Recording Technique for condenser mic, without a pop filter, that I can try?

I have tried singing off to the side, as suggested in some books I have, and even turning my head off to the side (muy rapido) when using those aspirated consonants. But, can anyone suggest any better alternatives?

I can't imagine why a pop screen would affect what's being recorded unless:

A) You have a cheap or dirty pop screen
B) The pop screen is causing you to back away further from the mic. Obviously, this would make a huge difference.

There are things you can do with mic placement, but they're all going to require that your mouth isn't pointed directly at the mic, which isn't going to help your situation.

If you're noticing different results with and without the pop screen and you're sure that your mouth is the same distance and angle from the mic, I'd recommend getting a new pop screen.
 
pretty sure the beef you are missing is the extra beef you get from the proximity effect.

try moving your pop filter closer. also the closer you get the more filtering you are going to need, so you might want to wrap your pop filter in pantyhose to get some extra protection. also, as you said, singing off axis helps too.

hate to do this to you, but have you considered getting a beyer m88 for your voice? it might be just the ticket for you...

One trick is to tape a pencil to the front of the mic. That will disperse the air so it doesn't slam the diaphragm.

Wow- that sounds so logical. Can't wait to try it.
One question is -
Would I tape the pencil vertical or horizontal on the mic (as I look at it from straight on)

the capsule is round, so guess how much it matters :)


most people do it vertical (parallel to mic body) just because it's easier to get it to stay in place though.
taping pencils has a few theoretical problems, more so than using a pop filter (it blocks a certain amount of on-axis high frequency content, and also causes a slight resonance - could be good or bad depending on the mic/singer combo)

Yes of course ! Now I see it - what you mean about the shape of the capsule!

I have actually gone back to my pop filter, inching it much closer to the mic (without touching the mic) and my mouth closer to the filter. Next comes the discipline to keep my face right in there...

I also toiled over the EQ and settled on some settings that are good for my situation. I'm putting the EQ first before any other effect I use. The new EQ settings made such a difference that I could almost leave out the compressor (yeow- I hope!), but oye I have settled on a small amount of compression after all.
