When recording drums I sometimes hear a pop or click. I think it is from the bass drum mix but it may be an overhead. Any ideas on how to avoid this? Is it mild distortion?

It could be any number of things. We need more information than what you gave.

Maybe your drummer is hitting the mics.

Maybe something in the drumset has a creak.

Maybe your software sample rates are not matching with you’re A/D converter. But, if you are using a portable 4-track recorder, this won’t apply.

Maybe your mic is causing clipping. Is it a large diaphragm mic?

It is too difficult to tell from this distance.

No it's not a sound that would come from the kit, sounds more likely to be that 'clipping' you talk of. It is a bass drum mic, so yes, it is a large diafram mic. Recording onto a digital 8-track.
Many Thanks

Right, done a bit of research into clipping. Had a play around with the mixer which has an in-built limiter type thing that I wasnt aware of, and now seems to be clip free!

Well, since the limiter fixed the problem, you were obviously clipping.

Now, you should try to take the limiter off, and lower the gain on the mic, because it means that you are recording a bit too hot.

Yes. Spend a good amount of time on getting the gains correct on the drum mics before recording. Some drummers get excited when they play with the band and go apeshit on the heads. :p
