Poor Sound Quality

I'm a rock music home recorder and I use Reaoson to make my drum beats and Cubase to record tracks. My question is this: When I get done with a track and mix it down and then master it with some compression and eq it still is horribly low volume wise compared to other recordings. How can I get the mix volume up to regular cd level? If I turn the master volume up it peaks.... I'm done with my cd but I'm totally not satisfied with the sound quality. Also, what's is the true diference between 16 bit and 24 but audio? I'm recording 16 bit and I thought that might be my problem but even compared to old Bob Dylan recording my mix is very low. Thanks a whole lot!

If i record the tracks any louder I get peaking. If I compress more I get peaking....

There very nature of compression reduces peaks. You are doing something wrong.

there must be something wrong then...cuz i know when i peak my tracks at like -6db...and play them all at the same time with/out mixing...its loud as fukk...very close to most commercial cd's....

Er, I'll add to that. While mixing, lower the master volume so you don't ever clip. Then after mixdown, limit.

Man, I'm just a musician who started home recording because studios are too expensive. Obviosly I have no idea what I'm doing. If there's anyone bored out there who's interested in helping me master 12 tracks e-mail me at thevampirezach@aol.com. I don't have any way to compensate you but if we use your masters I'll include mastered by (insert your name here) and a special thank you in the cd booklet.

Not necessarily...you are thinking of limiting. You need to have a fast enough attack and high enough ratio to actually limit the peaks.
