Unfortunately, due to a (very) limited budget, those are the only two mics I can my hands on! I'll be purchasing a low-end mixer to function as a pre-amp.

Can this be done? Yes, I've re-discovered how much the PG48 sucks. The only thing I could probably use that microphone for would be to mic the snare, but still, what the hell would I do with the SM58? Should I attempt to overhead the whole damn kit with it?

I'm not exactly expecting über-professional sound here, just something that can pick up the drums for a gritty black metal recording.

Any recommendations would be welcome.

I guess you have a few options. I don't know anything about the pg48 so this is all just speculation.

-Use one mic as a mono overhead (see which one sounds the best) somewhere near the drummers head and put the other mic in the kick.

-Use both mics as a stereo pair of overheads. (I don't think this is the best options since you are doing black metal).

If all else fails just drown the drums and everything else in reverb like an Old emperor record and no one will ever know the difference.
