pod users

[PSP]

i have been searching for a new efects unit. I currently use a digitech unit but am very unhappy with the sound. I run my guitar through the unit to some external eq then into my computer to record.

I do not play live ..just at home (studio)

My question to all you POD owners is how realistic are the tones. his topic has been debated to death i know but i recently came across a tone transfer library site for the pod. You know, you pick an artist and someone has dialed in what they think the sound for a cetain song should be on the POD...do YOU use those settings???? and how realistic in comparison to the real artist are they?

anyone know if there is more from line 6 on the way???

The pod is as good as it gets given the fact that most of us can't afford 10 guitars, & 10 amps. As for the tone transfer library--some of the tones are great, some are ok, some suck.
a lot of how a tone sounds also depends on the guitar you plug into the pod. crunchy tones sound great with guitars with humbuckers, clean tones sound better with single coils. My pod happens to play really well with a cheap dearmond guitar. my les paul sucks with most of the pod tones, I have a rickenbacker that sounds great with clean tones.

As long as you realize the Pod will not sound "just like" a nice tube amp mic'ed up correctly....it is a reasonable facsimile of several different amps....I think that when tweaked the Pod, J-Station, the DG Stomp, etc. all get very nice tones and somewhat close to the real thing......

IMO it's a lot more than just a reasonable facsimile.

i own several vintage BF fenders and a JCM-800. i can get real close with the POD and not just crunch tones. i'm talking suttle distortions and i mean real close. i can get closer to my amps with the POD than i've been able to do with other similar real amps of like kind. meaning, amps aren't created equal. tubes, speakers, speaker cabinets, power supply sag, and pickups all play a major roles in tones.

with tones created patiently, i'm a believer that know one will know the better. as on Lef Leppards Pyromania and Hysteria all the drums were sampled using 8-bit Fairlight technology.

the last three bands i've had in all opt'd to use the POD and they've all really liked the results and these guys all use Marshall's, Fenders, etc. i'm a believer great results are to be had with patience. you can't just hook-up and go.

the main influence is the guitar pickup. the pickup and desired tone need to be matched. quite often my clients have to swap guitars (pickups) to find the desired tone. even though they've used their guitar for their normal gig's, it just doesn't work in the studio. it's like having to retune drums for recording. it's not that the POD's at fault; it's tone matching. i can't over emphasize this point. don't have the expectation that the POD will deliver the tone you want regardless of pickup.

A nice tube amp miced up correctly can sound like a piece of shit as well Gidge, not trying to state the obvious. POD is a good tool, just like an amp, guitar, guitar pick or a branch.

The pod is not that much of a stretch from guitar/effect amp technology over the last 15 years. It blows my mind that people get so anal about it. 'Oh god a DOD distortion pedal!!!' Don't use that, it's got a chip in it.

Emeric, somehow I sense that you believe I made an anti-Pod post....that is far from the truth...I am one of the biggest Pod/J-Station fans here.....I dont even use an amp or stomp box anymore...Im J-Station exclusive....its just that so many people first get their Pod and think its awesome and are stoked and saying "I GOT A POD" and months down the road something snaps and then it's "eww, i got a pod" ......Im not gonna point these people out by name (Slack).....I was just trying to answer the question "how realistic are the tones" without setting up false hopes.....

No Gidge, I didn't think you were making an anti-pod post. I was just speaking generally. I'm not a pod-lover, it's just another gizmo, like digital delay. Those singers who use digital delay, man oh man.

i plugged into the pod for the first time the other day at the music store...i dont know why i hadnt tried it before. Ive played guitar for 16 years and have always just tried to use what i had as best i could...I did like the sound but as others have mentioned its all about pickups too. So now i need to find a way to audition many types of pickups with the pod...look out music stores here i come. Stores around here are sh1ty that way..."see the pickups in a box, read the article about what they are supposed to sound like and buy before you try idea"... i will have to hunt down a place with some guitars with more than just stock pickups in them to get what i really am after...i will know when i here it!!!!
