Thinking of getting the Rack pod you see... £400 in the UK..... interested in how the amp/mike outlay evens out against the price of the rack - remembering that i'd still need to splash out on a multi effect as well as amp/mike

If that’s what you’re after a POD would definetly be worth its value. You can certainly record decent guitar sounds with it. In fact in many cases you can’t even tell the difference between a miked amp or an amp modeller IMHO.
You might also want to check out the V-amp 2, which is considered to be the (much!) cheaper version of the POD. Some would argue it is even better. The V-amp also comes in a rack model.
