POD bass tones... better than PODxt for guitar?

Basic question, are the bass tones from the POD a different kettle of fish or are they on the same par as those for guitar?

I have a PODxt which I never use anymore because to my ears I just can't get a good sound out of it - even my Marshall MG sounds far superior. I play guitar based instrumental so I have very specific requirements for tones. My problem as a one man band is getting basslines together. I've just invested in a bass and have two options available:
1) Get the bass upgrade for the PODxt that can process bass guitars
or
2) DI the bass and deal with it later (either reamp it or use another software solution) - I can't mic up amps or cabs at home with kids in the house.

Any bass players out there who have used the bass model pack on a PODxt?
Any alternatives?

The Sansamp bass unit is nice.
I've never heard the Bass POD though.

Is this for recording

or playing live, or both?

What kind of bass do you have, and what kind of sound are you going for?

Also, how much is the upgrade?

I don't have any answers, unfortunately. I have an old 2.0, and I don't think it sounds too bad on bass using the tube pre setting, but it depends on what you like and how picky you are.

A couple of guys here like the Bass V-Amp, and of course, the tried and true 'standard' is the SansAmp. I keep meaning to get one of those just because it is the standard and it seems like I ought to have one. I just don't do enough recording right now to justify it.
