Don't like the vocals.
The guitars are kinda harsh, but Ive had the same problem.
Its really hard to try and keep the high end of the guitars without them sounding harsh.

Eck

I guess that is why mine went to MUD. :(

Its a shame because all the other tracks in the song have been recorded pretty damn well. Guitars are the hardest to record in my opinion though.

I think it is a matter of mic placement and production engineering. I usually track things they way I think they will fit best in the mix. Seeing that we did not know what the intentions were for the decisions made during tracking, everyone mixing the song just tries their best at what they hear and from experience. I hate the sound of harsh non-dynamic electric guitars. I thing a lot of the “Nu-Metal” has gone that way.

Nu-Metal guitars are as smooth as a babies arse! :)
I like the smoothness that pro productions manage to achieve, although the nu-metal guiar sound is a bit boring after youve heard it on like 20 albums ;)

When it comes to tracking guitars I tend to be pretty conservative with gain and brightness. That way in the mix I can atleast partially avoid that issue. Good amps + mic placement help a lot too.

Nice mix man.
reminds me of my mix actually.
Listen to mine if you get a minute and see if you think they are similar. :)

What did you do to the guitars? They sound great.
I didnt spend that much time on the guitars, gona play with them in my second mix.

I'd like the vox to sound more upfront and meaty sounding. I'm not a huge fan of the ambience/space put on the vox. The guitars on mine have more bite, but maybe too much. I like the snare sound. I like the effect on the long drawn out "chiiiiiiiild" in the middle, what did you do there, some sort of multidelay and panning? Very cool. The cymbals sound weird to me, like maybe there is too much bleed from all the tom mics or something, making it phasy or weird sounding. I gated like a mofo on all those tom mics, and I also used both top and bottom mics for each tom. I'd just like the hear it a bit more aggressive/upfront sounding overall.

Also, the firepod is a pretty decent step up from that soundblaster eh? Or have you used it yet?

Cheers man.
Just got the firepod up and running last night.
Sounds very clean. All we need now is another Firepod and mics and cables and stands. :) Then we can record drums properly.

I just automated reverb and a delay on the vocal CHiiild bit, and I think I duplicated and automated the pan to create an element of width.

I only used a little reverb and delya on the vocals, not much ambience going on, but maybe too much for some folk. I thought it suited the metalica style song.

Yeah the guitars are a bitch to mix. Its either they dont have any bite and they are smooth, or they have bite and they are harsh. I prefer smooth over harsh, but its annoying the guitars cant be smooth and have bite. :(

The OHs I duplicated and placed a high pass filter on the duplicate up to about 6k, compresed to fek and back and boosted from 12k up by a few dB.
Ill check for pahsing, I didnt notice any when mixing.

Cheers,
Eck

i'm too lazy to re-mix this one, so i'll stick with my first entry as my official contest entry. thanks, haha

OK, I'll try to get to it this week. Am I the only judge?

I was supposed to be a judge too. I also thought Ektronic was in on this too.

Either way I will do my part.

One thing I want though, Everybody yell at the same time "no more submissions!!!!"

If it's judging time, It's judging time.

K?

If anyone want's to clarify thier official entry repost the link with commentary to that effect. Wouldn't want to judge the wrong mix.

Judges, email me at music at naiant dot com, and I will send you the judging spreadsheet. There are formal categories and scores, but it's really open for your interpretation of how to best apply them.

Is that your way of trying to keep from getting a myriad of penis enlargment emails:D
