Plugin and VST function - yes I searched

Just finished looking at about 2 or 3 pages of a search for "free plugins" and so now I have a bookmark folder of about 8-10 sites for downloading from. Thanks for those links.

I havn't dug into Cubase much yet, really at all, so I'm wondering about the funtion of these plug ins.

I know there are signal processors (comps, eqs, etc) and I know there are VSTs. I was under the impression the VSTs were basically instruments/sounds, but then I thought I read someone that someone said there are VST signal processor type applications.

So whats the real story behind the function of these two items?

I also don't know the ins and outs of the (how to load, and all the tricks of using them) but I havn't made it through the manual yet and I figure that might tell me.

VST = virtual studio technology
VSTI = virtual studio technology instrument

vst's are virtual signal processors. vsti's are virtual instruments. often though, both are simply called vst's. technically, it's not correct to call something like a bass synth plugin a vst. it should be called a vsti. hope that helps.
 
there are vst effects, and then there are also vsti (vst instruments), which are midi triggered. you can control them via midi controller, or you can program them to play things in cubase's piano roll. they are generally just samples of actual instruments - guitars, drums, synthesizers, orchestra type instruments, etc.

I kinda liked his Quistion on how to install VST's. I to, dont know how to install thies puppy's.any one?
 
most of these downloads come zipped, so you unzip them into the VST folder in your cubase. It will show up in the program when you load it next, because part of the startup is a VST scan. VSTs are generally .dll file types.
