I'd like to utilize both plug-ins and outboard gear in my digital recording environment. Are there certain devices that are generally "better" in an audible sense in either plug-in or outboard form? Like would it be a good move to use an eq plug in, but spend the cash to get a good external reverberator? How bout compressors, and other effects?

While I don't have a whole lot of experience with outboard gear vs pluggins, the one I have used is the Anteres Auto-Tune. The Plugin is very affective and only about 150$ in direct X version. The rackmounst version is around 500$ and works really nicely, but is not a percise as the plugin. The plugin is probably the best I have ever used.
Hope I could help in some way.

You buy a outboard compressor, you get ONE compressor!

You buy a plugin compressor, you get many many many compressors.

Most plug-ins are pretty good. You can use the same effect package on several tracks as previously stated. I prefer outboard gear for my reverb though. Can't put it in a better way, but I think the better tool is the one you get used to using.
