I just discovered that I have an amp plug-in that came with protools called: amplitude (I lost the darn serial number though - which on a side note does anyone know if I can call digidesign and get that or am I hosed?)

anyways don't jump my sh@% but I want to know your opinion on amp plug-in vs. real amp. I am really liking the sound of amplitude and it's convenience.

I can use it for bass also, which is really nice

Software is only going to continue to get better, and even some big names are using stuff like Guitar Rig 3 these days. Just trust your ears. Your average listener probably can't tell much of a difference and often times tracks are listened to in mp3 format anyway.

obviously the final decision is up to you, but personally I hate using software instruments. None of today's software can compare with the true tone and fullness of miking a tube amp. But it is very convenient if you're on a low budget/not THAT interested in recording

I'm on the fence about emulation software. I've used it and liked the results, but then again i've never had the opportunity to mic up a tube amplifier. I own Pod Farm, which is essentially Gearbox in a new format, but i've prefered the sounds i get micing my roland cube amplifier with an sm57 than the sounds i got with the software. I've learned from experience what people have been telling me all along...there is no right way of doing things...it's all about what sounds best to you. As of right now i use Pod Farm only for bass, and enjoy micing my guitar amp for tracking guitar. Again...it's all what you like better.
