I made a cover of Audioslave's "I am the highway".
I've been mixing it over and over again and I just can't seem to get it right. Somehow the vocals don't fit into the mix, I don't know. I will have to do them over, but before I can do so I need to know how the recording can be improved.
Please listen, all comments are welcome.

Just curious, but why are you covering Audioslave? I'll bet the ink on the original isn't even dry yet.

what happened to the whole intro?? AND, perhaps more disturbing is you left out the whole last verse.. I was waiting to see how you would pull that off.. this is a tough song to sing.. you did pretty good but it's hard not to want to hear Chris..

I've heard a few of your covers before, maybe it's time for an original.. I'm sure it would be good..

I have been listening to this CD on an endless loop for a month now..

Well I havnt heard the original ver so I just listened to it for what it was.

You are talented. The recording is very good imo. If it wasn't for you telling me that you were covering Audioslave, I would think that the vocals were really good, recording too. I think its mixed fine, just maybe need to warm up the vox just a bit and I think they will settle in a little better. It's a warm sounding song.
Problem is trying to cover Chris Cornell.
Again not that you didn't sound great, but like B.Sab said, you want to hear him.

Really though, I did like it alot!

I haven't heard the original. I can't imagine trying to emulate Chris. I've been listening to him since Louder Than Love (Soundgarden), and he has one of the most amazing rock voices in history. Although he's lost a bit of that in his "old age."

The song's very well recorded and mixed. I can't really find any faults other than the "starkness" of the vocals. They seem to stand out as less produced than the rest of the song. A few "clinker" notes here and there, but, overall, a good job with the singing. If it were me, I'd back the vocal off a TINY bit. Nice guitar sounds. Very full and studio-sounding. Very clean sound on the whole. I like that.

I enjoyed the listen! I'll have to check out the original!

"Don't listen to me." -- Piltdown Man

Khompewtur - So what if the audioslave album is still pretty recent? A song doesn't have to be old to cover it. I just enjoy making them..

B.SABBATH - The intro lol, I still have to record it. The little part you heard was some midi-organ sound, but Tom M. plays is on guitar on the original, so I can't record it untill I get a volume-pedal.
I'll add the last verse too, although I'm not sure I'll be able to pull it off... ;)
I'm working on some of my own stuff too, but that's a lot harder than doing covers.

VSpaceBoy - That's just my issue, how do I warm the vox up? I can only dream of sounding more like Chriss off course.

PiltdownMan - I'm glad you like the mix, I don't have any monitors so I still use a home stereo system and play it on different systems.
btw I think Chriss still sounds just as amazing as ever..

Thanks for taking time to listen everyone, your comments make me wanna finish this one.

Would have to agree about the vocs... c'mon... Chris Cornell? :) Applause for
attempting something this ambitious... that guy is one of the most talented
rock vocalists... to be honest...would like to hear some more work on your
vocal abilities here ;)

The music isn't bad... but Audioslave is one band I don't understand... a kick-
ass vocalist w/subpar musician leftovers from "Rage Against The Machine"?
Sorry, but IMNSHO "RATM" were never complex enough musically for my ears.

Again, it's cool you pick something so ambitious. Thanks for sharing your
work with us. Keep working, man.

Awaiting flames on the "RATM" comments :D

I really figured you for a Rage fan Chad.. I always liked them, and always thought they would be great with a real singer.. I love that new Audioslave CD.. Probably because I love Soundgarden and this is the closest I'll get to a new S.G. cd.. Gotta love the Whammy pedal in almost every song.. :D

I love the whole album too. Never been too much of a RATM fan to be honest but I have almost every Soundgarden album. I think the combination of Chris with the RATM guys is just awesome. I can’t wait to see them live sometime.
It says on the album that all sounds on it are made either on guitar, bass, drums or vocals wich is pretty amazing when you take a close listen.

i love audio slave also!!! If you remember, ZACk didnt play an instrument, so these are not left over musicians from RATM, they ARE the musicians from RATM, I dig the fact that these two styles cam together, S>G> and RATM. very cool and I always loved Cornells vox! He is getting better with age!! listen to the early stuff!!!! Much better now!!! later all

They do have some good songs... I don't totally dislike them... but their bassist just follows the guitarist too much, imo... not much variety... jmho...

Hey Man,
Nice cover. ...just a little pitchiness, but as previously mentioned, Chris C. aint no easy cover. This is an amibitious effort to say the least.

Re: ratm, Chad, Ive gotta disagree w/ ya bro. The simplicity of the band was kinda the point. ....BIG, simple, slammin grooves. I did some club touring w/ ratm in the early 90's when they were working their first album, and I made many a personal journey into their pits after our sets ......cause after a few drinks, a guy just couldnt help it. That band could generate such huge energy in a live environment. Ive never heard a band that small that could get a groove that big and undeniable. Thats something i kinda miss in the audioslave stuff. ...the rawness is gone. ...but theyve got Chris now so that cant be a bad thing.

back to Layne's cover (sorry for the rant man), nice work, and i agree w/ Sam.... ...lets hear an original, its gotta be good:)
