Please tell me how I did this

The song is called, The Hooded Rider. Work in progress. When I exported audio, I got a kind of "ducking" effect in that when the vocals come in, the other tracks kind of back down in volume. I have no idea how I did this, but I need to do it again for an audio book project. I want the voice over to back down the music in the background.

Here's what I did differently: I was getting dropouts, so I created an effects send instead of doing individual reverbs for about 5 of the 9 tracks. I was told that all those reverbs were maxing out my CPU.

That's about all I know. Any help would be really appreciated. At Soundclick, I've put an older version right underneath this one where the ducking doesn't happen. Wish I knew how I did this. Thanks:)

Now the ducking disappeared

I think I'm going nuts. Earlier today the heavy compression or "ducking" happened when I was mixing to a wav file and when I did the conversion to MP3, it disappeared. Sorry for the confusion. I'm really stumped on this one.:o

Sounds good to me. Kind of long for a folk style tune. As far as your processor goes, you can always render the tracks within your mix to free up cpu cycles. I use to do that, but just stuck a new cpu in and Im fine know. I need to learn how to do an effects chain in my DAW. Im still a damn newbie.

For some reason Soundclick isn't working for me. I tried other's songs there as well and no go...I also tried other's songs, who were not uploaded to Soundclick and they worked. Since Bushmaster was able to listen, I guess Soundclick is chastising me for something...:D

Glad you like the tune, Bushmaster, yeah it's kind of long because there's supposed to be some git and flute fills to keep your interest, but I'm having computer hell in a basket. I'm not about to ask a player to come into my studio and have a bunch of stutters and dropouts.

I just ordered a new machine. dual core quad - 3 gigs of 800 Mhz RAM man I can't wait. Still can't understand why there's the ducking in my wav file.
I'd love to email it to one of you guys who know what going on and maybe you identify what you're hearing. Just PM me for the file. Thanks

Sorry that Soundclick is not behaving, true-eurt, I'd be happy to email you the tune. Could use some harmony and some female vox if you resemble your avatar.;) If not, could use some male harmony as well.:)

For some reason, the vocal comes a little to the left. Maybe is just me.

:D..yah I'm female, but on the phone, you'd wonder......and it doesn't mean I resemble THAT avatar either..;)....I'm more of the granny rock type...hahahah:p

I'ma gonna see if Soundclick is working for me now...oh...and what's harmony?:D:eek:

You get it to work, true?

No ducking from this end.
The vox do lean to the side a little.
The mix is fine so far but get the itch so a BIG epic sound behind the vocal. All the elements are there just the dynamics aren't set for my mood.

Still trying to flesh this out, Ray. I'm going to add some flute fills, but there's no room for a solo. I'd like some more bass and guitar fills from somewhere. I play acoustic, so any fills from me would be from a Washburn steelstring.

The ducking is there in the wav file, but goes away in the MP3 conversion. Pretty strange.
