I am putting together a studio and have the following Mics in mind. Let me know what you think about these selections and what i plan on using them for. my budget for Mics is about $3000

Royer R121 (Guitar amps, Vocals, Drum room)
Beyer M160 (Guitar amps, Drum room)
AT 4033 or KSM44 (Vocals, Drum room, acoustic insturments)
2x Oktava MK012 (overheads)
3x SM57 (toms, snare)
D112 (bass drum)

Im going to get a 16 channel soundcraft mixer and record into a tascam MS-16 1" reel to reel. I will be recording mostly rock (live bands) what do you think? Do you think it is wise to have two ribbon Mics, or ditch the Beyer and get a better LDC (maybe a tube mic)? my only concern with that is not having enough good mics to record a lot of amps at once.

I actually think you should ditch the 121, keep the Beyer and get a really nice LDC. Not that the 121 isnt a really nice mic but its more of a color special purpose mic and you really should get a really solid mic cabinet before worrying about a mic like that. The beyer is a good choice. Is that a Hypercardiod one? If it is then use it on snare. 3 Sm57s are nice but you would probably be happier with just one and get a 3 Sennheiser e602 pack or something similiar. You will be much more happier with them on toms, and if your using the Beyer on snare you will have a great drum set up. Go with the KSM44 instead of the AT4033. You will find more uses with the KSM44.

With the money you save from the 121 you could get another KSM44 and probably another color of LDC. This gives you alot more options. The problem is the 121 is a very expensive mic. And youll find its more selective than you think with what you use it on. You most likely wont use it on vocals. And if you are looking for a warmer color then get something like a SM7 or something like that. Something that is cheaper. Besides that. With your preamp selection you have alot of problems with the 121. Those things take an incredible amount of clean gain. If you are still set on the Royer ribbon then take it up to the 122 with your preamp selection.

That's a good start on a nice mic locker... keep all those mics, and if you find you need another mic... get it too. ;) If you plan on recording a lot of different bands... you might want some more kick mic options and SDC mic options next.

I'm not a fan of sm57's. You should get some sennheisers like someone else mentioned instead. There are a lot of better options.

I would agree with not getting the R121, and the sugestion of the SM7 is spot on. An EV re20 or re27 will work also. Also, due to quality issues you might want to get something else besides the Oktavas, like some studio projects c4's.

In fact for the cost of a royer you could get
SM7 - $300
nt1a - $200
M179 - $189
re20 - $300
SP B1 - $99

Or whatever, you get the idea.

Also, instead of the R121 you could get a higher end matched pair of SDC's, freeing up $ the oktavas would be using for something else.

Darnold, where you finding the Sennheiser e602 3 pack deal?

I agree with not using the Royer. It's a transient control freak and rounds over the edges of most sources. Very useful when you have the need but it locks up a lot of money for broader usage mics.

The RE20 would also make an excellent kick mic, I hear the sm7 is good too but noone I know has one so I havn't tried. Personally I don't like the D112 but there are drummers who want / expect you to have one. Also consider the ATM25 - great for kicks with no port.

Where in heavens name have you seen the RE-20 for $300! I haven't seen the SM7B for less than $315 (through Amazon).

Amped - Sorry i meant the e604s.

RE-20s can be had for $300 or less all over ebay and such.
