Please critique my mix, and be brutal.

I'm still a beginner, although I've been working at learning recording / mixing since about 2003.

Still striving for that commercial sound.

Please let me know what I am doing wrong or right.

The song sounds great, good tune. Sounds kinda dark and muffled though can't really hear the cymbals very well. Need more upper midrange and treble.

Needs more everywhere, or just on the cymbals ?

Drums are 1 Overhead, 1 Kick, and 1 Snare.

Think I should boost the overhead level, and maybe eq the overhead a bit ?

Any guess on which frequencies ?

I'm not a brutal person, but typing as listening... I like the sound of the mix, vocals jumping up with the guitar is nice. This sounds like some classic rock/pop, the way its mixed and the tune. I like that. Don't know if that's what you intended, if you're going for a more commercial current sound I'd try adding more punch to the sound. Just an idea, maybe instead of cranking the cymbals, you could add some tambourine to parts for some catchy high end. Could sound good. Backup vox sound good in the stereo field. I like the tune a lot actually, very catchy and feel good. Nice

Good tune. You've got to be a Shins fan, yes? Your voice is very reminiscent of James Mercer, especially in the beginning when you sing high. Maybe a Walkmen influence too?

I agree with most of the comments. The mix is a little dark and muffled. Where are you recording/mixing? Have you treated the room acoustically at all?

Wow.... thanks for the comments and info guys.

It's actually a friend of mine. Craig is Shin's influenced for sure.

It's Craig's song - I just recorded it for him, and played bass on it.

My room is somewhat acoustically treated - in that I've thrown so expensive foam here and there. (The triangle type stuff, bought at a music store - for way to much money).

Also, all corners have roxual insulaiton in wooden frames - so I think my room is okay.

We are going to that indie rock / classic rock vibe - but If I had the option to make to more commericial sounding it would be great to know the option is there.

By more punchy - do you mean I should compress the master bus in some way ?

Tambourine idea is a good one as well.
