Wow - holy crap - I LOVE this song. It's really hard for me to figure out how to comment on the overall mix. All the individual parts seems really well recorded. The main vocal is GREAT, the BG vocals are fantastic, the guitars sound awesome, and I like the bass part/tone. But then I hear the mix and a lot of stuff just seems out of balance level wise, it doesn't seem to gel up. I can tell that all the pieces are there, and well played and recorded and good. I don't know - I guess in stages I would - get the lead vocal more consistent in volume level and more out front, back down the level of the BG vocals. But man - I love this song.

Greg - thanks for the follow up. I like the idea of tracking the guitars a little louder. I don't really crank the amp when I track. I'm going to turn it up more next time.

VHS - you gave me some good pointers on levels. I'll listen back in a couple of days with your comments in mind.

chuck - I'm glad you like the song. Those comments are always nice to hear. Considering your comments on levels... I think, taking your comments into consideration with other's comments, the best approach is actually fairly simple. Turn down the overheads a couple of dbs, and turn up the lead vocal a couple of dbs. I'll probably have to tweak the vocal differently in the verses vs the chorus. But I think it's a pretty simple tweak.

Thanks to everyone.

Yes! What amp are you using? I think you'll generally find the guitar tracks will have more of a rich, textured, almost 3D sound with the amp needing less preamp gain to sound good. Try it out. Loud is good!

Also, I think I agree with VHS's comments about the vocals and backing vocals. I've heard the song so many times now that I didn't pay much attention to them. But they are kind of muddled in the verses. To someone listening for the first time they might not be able to make out many of the words.

I think I agree largely with chuck TM - the song is cool and catchy, but the mix doesn't quite gel. The kick sounds a little boxy to me and the bass has a few boomy frequencies and is a little overpowering (on my system at least). Agree with the general sentiment that the lead vocal needs to be more out in front too.

Seems to me like you're nearly there and with a couple of days ear rest from the mix you can revisit and tweak.

Somehow haven't heard this before either, but it's good man. The standard on here is high at the moment :)
