The point of mshilarous's post was that there is no need to test. You will not detect a difference, nor will it affect the battery life of your field recorder.

There was a difference when I went to heavy shielded TRS cables to the studio monitors. Not much of a difference, but a difference. The signal is analogue until it's converted, so the cables do matter. Not that anyone would notice on an ipod. But I'm one who notices, I might not be able to pinpoint how it's different, but I can tell that it's different. Even changing from .ac3 audio to .mp2 audio for the DVD I've been working on, is a big difference to me. Very noticeable if only for certain instruments. Cymbals and high pitched percussion instruments mainly. And that's just what it sounds like on my laptop.

To the OP: Check out the Nady RSM-4 Ribbon Mic. Remove the inner mesh. Very good and "real sounding" for $80. I used to bash on chinese crap, but this mic really surprised me when I borrowed it from a friend. No I have two coming, and I'm going to get rid of the inner mesh, and change out the transformer.

But with ribbon's, you have to be careful with them.

If you are only using your $100 mic for vocals (whichever you choose) the SM57 or SM58 are always good choices.

Always use a pop filter for vocals.

I have one of those, and LOVE it as a lead guitar/second mic to fill out a SM57 guitar cab mic, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first/only mic. It's very dark, not very transparent at all, and as a ribbon pretty delicate.

A SM58 is probably the best place to start if you're looking to learn how to record on the cheap. If you can spring for some sort of phantom-powered pre as well and you're just recording vocals then some of the condenser recomendations are worth a look, but you can pretty much record damned near anything with a SM57 or 58, and they're more or less bulletproof.

Just, expect to spend a LOT of money once you start to get a feel for what you like and what you don't - this isn't a cheap hobby. :p

That's not true. If it were true, why would you need to read about it? You should be able to hear it easily. Any cable effect must vary with the length of the cable. Indeed, cable capacitance does. But 20' is far too short to matter with low-impedance professional microphones.

Agreed. This matters when you're talking about unbalanced cables, like a 1/4" to 1/4" guitar cable, but for a balanced XLR cable it's a moot point, it'd have to be absurdly long before you'd hear anything.

Part of when I learned about ballanced cables was that it was a means to an end for long cable length problems.

I posted this same exact question 5 years ago and now I have a $3000-$6000 per year habit! They get you hooked on one mic that sounds "pretty good for the money" and then you just want BETTER!!

Then it preamps and cables, new mixers, monitors, dynamic mics, headphones, outboard gear!

IT NEVER STOPS!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::D

Phil--it does indeed stop. Unless of course your wife uses your life insurance proceeds to keep buying gear.

what's the best microphone under 100$

There is no best, really. Go with the one you like and you can afford.

do i will need pop filter

Not unless you have potential issues with plosives and poor mic discipline like most of us do.

do i will need Mbox ??

No.

what's the best software to record under Windows Vista system ( laptop )

It completely depends on your laptop. My guess is that since you're going cheap with the recording gear, you also went cheap with the laptop. I would check the recommended system specs for any product you wanted to use, and look over the forums for that product to gauge the kind of performance other people are getting with similar boxes.

how the studios clearify the voice of singer ( :p coz the voice in the songs is not really the same like the original singer voice)

Could be a million things, but based on your description I'm going to guess it's compression.

Only $3000-6000 per year...you are just a bubblegummer...lol.

Yeah...this can be an expensive thing to get into if you approach it the wrong way...I try to approach it like a Dealer and buy equipment that I know I can sell for more and make a few hundred here and there...then keep my account open to take advantage of buying oppertunities when they come up...so I have some top of the line stuff and it doesnt really cost me anything...after aquiring $7000 worth of gear so far this year Im over $1000 ahead.

We are talking about the length of cable BEFORE the microphone preamp? Aren't we? I suppose that after the preamp it shouldn't matter much. But before where the signal is weakest and the impedance has an influence, it should (if only in theory) matter.

I've only got about $5K in audio gear that I want to upgrade to. Although I suppose that I'll have greater needs with greater gear. And I've got at leaast $5K in video gear than I'm wanting, although that recording route can add up even quicker than this audio habbit.

The strides in technology with the video end seems to be getting better every other month...I can buy a better video camera that can fit in my pocket than the one that was twice my size I used to run at the local TV station in the 90s...its a great time to be in video.

Anass is an Arabic name.

Anass, you may have already gotten what you need from this thread but if not I think it would be smart to list in your public info what country you're from so those who reply won't hold your spelling/sentence structure errors against you thinking your posts are not serious.

And the translation of you name, eh, you know, means you're a hinder in English. So that's kind of another thing to be aware of. :D

I bet nuemes means 'one who is a know-it-all' in Mandarin :o
