The point of mshilarous's post was that there is no need to test. You will not detect a difference, nor will it affect the battery life of your field recorder.
There was a difference when I went to heavy shielded TRS cables to the studio monitors. Not much of a difference, but a difference. The signal is analogue until it's converted, so the cables do matter. Not that anyone would notice on an ipod. But I'm one who notices, I might not be able to pinpoint how it's different, but I can tell that it's different. Even changing from .ac3 audio to .mp2 audio for the DVD I've been working on, is a big difference to me. Very noticeable if only for certain instruments. Cymbals and high pitched percussion instruments mainly. And that's just what it sounds like on my laptop.

They get you hooked on one mic that sounds "pretty good for the money" and then you just want BETTER!!
