Let me take some time to explain what I have and my situation.I just am getting back to music now that my 4 boys are getting older and I want to relive and relearn what I have been negleting all these years. Before I got married I purchased a yamaha 16/4 mixing board that I would like to set up. I play a PRS with a marchall MG100hdfx series. and have a yamaha kx88 keyboard that uses a yamaha motif-rack. I also run 2 audi techica mics. for speakers I have to sound tech boxes. I also have a Packard Bell pc in this room and would like that included. So.......I have this all in a room down the stairs and I am having a brain fart on how it all is supposed to be hooked up.

If anybody could give me the time of day to explain to me what I have and how to hook all of this together I would be very greatful.

What are you trying to do? Record? Probably you will need recording software (I use Adobe Audition, but there are a lot out there) and an interface between your mixer and your computer, either a sound card or one of the USB/FIrewire or ethernet devices that allow you to plug a mic or mixer into one end and go out to the computer at the other.

BTW, a dedicated audio device is much better for recording than a Sound Blaster. If you're going to record, you might as well start off on the right foot. There are many boxes available, in all price ranges, and in all sorts of configurations.

If it were me, I'd probably go for something that the mixer would connect to, so that you could plug the mics into the mixer. This gives a lot more control than a sound card with analog ins.

A good place to start educating yourself is here:

I would suggest you Get a Multi-Input Sound Card Like an "EMU 0404" or "M-Audio Delta 44" that you Install into your PC and you Connect the Recording Output from the Mixer into Channels 1 & 2 of the Sound Card and you Connect all of your Devices(Mics, Keyboards,Guitar,Drums ect) into the Mixer and any Hardware Effects you have Can be connected to the Effect Send/Return on the Mixer so you can Add effect from the Mixer Or you Can Route the Ouputs from the Sound Card into the effects Units and Route them back in through the Inputs to add the effects.....

This is Simular To the set up I have and it works quite well...And these Multi-Input sound Cards will usually come with some Multi-Tracking software to get you started.....

Cheers

Already owning a mixer and various equipment such as you do, the first thing I'd get is a good sound card like those mentioned above. M-Audio Delta 1010, M-Audio Delta 44, something like that. Something I think you'll have to get though is a newer PC. Packard Bell?? Is that running Windows 95? I may be totally off base, but the Packard Bell's I have seen are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to outdated to do anything.

Check tigerdirect for a newer PC.

Yo Fade:

If you decide to do PC recording, you'll probably be looking at buying a new PC with many choices.

You have a mixer, a pretty good set of keys, mics, and, I think, some type of monitor/speakers.

OK Why not just pick up SIAB. [Studio in a box.] Fostex has some pretty good deals going at various vendors. Or you might look at a Boss unit. What I'm trying to do is make your jump into recording easy. Either of the mentioned SIABS can be had with CD production built in.

Once you spend some time recording and mixing and reading this forum, you many choose to try a PC based program.

Make sure and call ALL the 800 vendor numbers when you shop.

If your kids sing, you might get rich too! :D

Green Hornet  :D

All this info is great but....

Before I get any of these units mentioned above I would like someone to take a minute and go step by step on how what inputs and outputs from the equipment that I mentioned I have go where and into what? I am confused on where the input/output should go into first .......The mixer??when I do that and and go out from the output of the mixer into the QSC usa900 amp which feeds my monitor speakers all I hear is a buzz .no sound...when I by pass the mixer I get the ketboard to play but no mics...I would like to send my guitar, keyboard with motif-rack,mics,pc through the mixer first and from the mixer go into the amp which feeds the soundtechs....If there is a better way can someone give me in detail on how I should set my equipment up?..Listed above is everything I have..I really am greatful!

Well....if you had a soundcard like previously mentioned....you'd run whatever you were plugging into your mixer out to your soundcard which would go into your computer. Your soundcard would have outputs on it that you would run out to your to your power amp which connects to your monitor speakers.

Go here and click on connectivity.

I'd really like to see the spec's on that Packard Bell before you buy anything though.

Guys, you are not listening to fadethat. He doesn't need help with soundcards yet, he still needs to get some sound out of his synth to his speakers. Soundcards, computer, etc., is further down the list.

fadethat, you need to run a MIDI cable from your KX88 to your Motif rack. This will allow you to play the Motif from the KX88. Make sure the channels match or that the Motif is set to "omni" on the midi setup page.

You also need to run audio cables from the outputs of the rack synth to your mixer inputs. Channels one and two would work fine, or if those have preamps, use other channels and put your mics on the mixer inputs that have preamps.

The main mix outputs of the mixer should go to the amp, which is obviously then connected to the speakers.

So the first thing is to midi up your KX88 to the Motif, and run the audio cables from that to the mixer. Next, hook up your mics to a couple channels of the mixer. Then the main outputs of the mixer to the amp, and from there to the speakers. Now you should be in a position to hear sound, and if you are not, then you need to troubleshoot.

I suspect it is possible that you do not have the routing correct in the mixer. Perhaps you need to assign the channels to the main outputs? If you are cabled properly, some playing around with mixer settings should do the trick.

I believe his first question included wanting to work his Packard Bell into his current set up. That is what I was addressing.

SonicAlbert has it!

thats pretty much all there is.

of course theres a little bit more, but its all common sense from there.

Just remember the order.

(basically)

instrument>amp-preamp>mixer (line in)>amp>speakers

or for recording
instrument>amp-preamp>mixer (line in)>PC Line-in - input

always point outs to ins.

good luck.

Yes it did come with a manual that is why.......

Im confused because .I have now all my midi cables from the kx88 to the motif. and when I take the phone jacks L/r in put them in the channel 11 and 12 where it has L/R inputs and then 2 phone jacks from the main output to the amp and then to the speakers I get no sound....BUT if I pull the cables out of the main jack and insert them into the other C-R outs just above the main out I get mic sounds and keyboard plays.. But I have no controll over the Mixing slides, But the channel gains work......This is not how it is supposed to work ??????...any ideas...don't be afraid to call and leave a # to which I could get back to you..Maybe a live phone walk through is what I need

You may need to assign the channels to the Main mix, and you may need to assign the main mix to the outputs. Some mixers have routing options that allow you to defeat the main mix, and channels to mix. So double check your settings.

Sonic Albert, just to clarify, I wasn't trying to be a smart@$$ in my above post. Thats why I deleted the two before it, they sounded like I was.

No disrespect meant, hope you didn't take it that way.
