Hi, I'm really inexperienced when it comes to recording, but I'm taking a course at the local community college for recording with the Cubase SX 2.0 sofetware, so I've been trying to put together some of my own stuff for an at-home studio. I know that a good idea is to record all of the musicians live. Right now, I'm working with the Tascan US-122 so I only have 2 tracs of simultaneous recording. My question is how can I get more tracs of simultaneous recording with out having to go through a single line-in all pre-mixed?

The short answer would be to buy a different interface that offers more I\O.
How every many simultaneous tracks you want to be able to record will dictate how many inputs your interface (soundcard) needs to have.

Get a secondhand 001, they're cheap now, hopefully you can get the last software upgrade for it too (main reason they are cheap is that Digi has said it will stop suppotting the 001, or so I've been told anyway. But hey! That's the way of the world according to digital. Planned obsolescence). The last available software upgrade will give you 32 internal audio tracks plus I don't know how many auxilary sends (but certainly enough). You get 8 ins and outs automatically, and you can expand that to 16 in and out, the cheapest option for that would be the Bear-Ringer ADA 8000.

Then, if you get people in to record and you don't have enough mics, stands, leads, preamps, etc. go and rent what you need and charge it back to the client.

And the next person to tell me "hey, I wouldn't get a 001, I've heard the converters are bad, or Protools doesn't sound good" or whatever else it is that newbies regurgitate to each other in an attempt to look knowledgable - learn how to record and mix before spouting that crap.

Oh yeah and that applies to the Behringer thing too. Have a listen to something and then see if you can tell if it sounds good or not. In the case of the Behringer converter box, there are a hell of a lot of top level guys using them.

Question about that Digi 001 do you have to run Protools or can he/I still run Cubase?

The PT is supplied, but you can still use Cubase. I would sync them: Cubase for the MIDI and PT for the audio.

I think I saw at thread over at the DUC that had a link to a small program that would let you use the 001's ins and outs with different software. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to make it work, and I now have no idea where to find it. Which is a shame, because I would have loved to use Samplitude instead of PT.

So don't get my meaning wrong here, I'm no PT fan, in fact I hate the software, but it's just the easiest way to get 16 ins and outs.
