i just got a mackie 1402vlzPRO and i have some sm57's. i'm thinking of getting an ATM 25 for the kick drum....but would it be better to get a stereo compressor for the mics or some type of fx processor?? because i want good drum sounds...and i just got new drums..and i'm going to get new hi hats. is a compressor going to give me what i want?? or the kick mic? because the sm57 works great on the kick, i think.

and i record to cakewalk pro audio9.

You might want to think Adout a mic preamp.
The dbx 286A is a good piece for the money $200 new.

i'm going to look into them. have you used one? how do they work on drums?? i'd probably run it through my mixers fx loop so i could use it on all channels.

Yea I have one and i use it for snair.I have a joe meek I
use for kick.I would like to have one for every drum some day .I do use a compresser on mics on the drums.

I dont know how a micpre will work thru a fx loop
I would run a compresser thru the loop and try at least have a micpre for kick if your going for that big kick sound

err.. Running a mic-pre in the fx-loop? You mean, first each mic into the mic-pre's in your mixer, then through the aux-sends through ANOTHER mic-pre, and then gather all drums in the aux-return and record that... I don't really think that's how to use a mic-pre, but I have never used a stand-alone mic-pre... so I guess I wouldn't know..

And using a compressor through the loop? Man.. use those Insert-connectors...
