Firstly, I am disappointed just now to find out that my Mackie Onyx 400f has been discontinued so soon....

I have a new PC I just built and I just hooked up the onyx 400f for the first time with my M-Audio Bx8 Monitors. And the speakers are very annoyingly ringing when I'm not in an audio editing program (Ive only tried audition.) And when I am in audition I still get a hissing sound. Not really loud but I can barely make it out from the chair.

Im using the Onyx 400f (link to Mackie for product) with some good cables too.

I am using Windows 7 with the only available drivers from mackie's website for the 400f which are listed for "Vista only". And they are working I guess? The problem I am having is ringing monitors when I'm NOT in a sound program like Adobe Audition. I open audition and as soon as I choose Onyx 400f as my sound drivers the ringing stopped and only a slight hissing remained. Odd?

So im guessing its the motherboards onboard realtek audio drivers or hardware causing the ringing? And when adobe takes over completely.... the ringing stops. And furthermore this might make sense because the firewire is on the motherboard next to the onboard sound inputs kinda... ? On my last PC I had a separate PCI firewire card. Maybe I should do the same for this computer for transfering audio data through firewire?

ive also disabled realtek in win7's configurations, etc. I have yet to uninstall the drivers though.

What do you think? I've never encountered this.

With Audition Open I dont have ringing but I do have a slight hissing coming from the tweeters. ... odd, has to be from using the firewire on the mobo or the "windows vista drivers?"

please let me know your thoughts on what I should try or what might be causing this?

Nope I just did some troubleshooting. unplugged the firewire. Ringing still there. unplugged the XLR cable from the back of the monitor... ringing went down but still there. Now thats weird. Only thing different is I have them on their side and not standing up which I just switched and still ringing. They seem to come and go when they want. I mess with settings in WIndows Recording Devices properties and it stops and starts.

Plus Im using a furman power conditioner for the onyx 400f.... so... it must be the onyx drivers not quieting down the speakers? I have no idea... freaking me out....

Im definitely gonna try cause its so annoying listening to this high pitched ringing... Its like a ringing so high pitched you almost dont know your hearing it but you are... lol only coming from the tweet tweet tweeeterssss....

Yeah that didnt do it either. I think its something to do with the drivers working with windows 7. Ah well.

if it is still there with the FW unplugged, I would venture to guess that it is something with how the mixer is monitoring something since when the ASIO driver is running, it goes away. Are you also using this thing as a windows sound device?

Yeah. I was doing some pinpointing and I cant really remember what I narrowed down Id have to redo it. Because I unplugged firewire. Then unplugged the XLR cables in the back of the monitors. Then I stood them upright since the manual says not to lay them sideways, which I have to do because Im in a weird space and they wont fit standing up. None of that solved it. It's so weird cause I never had ringing in them before with the exact same setup. The only thing new is the PC.

So the only thing I can think of is somehow the drivers in windows would get rid of the so called ringing that might always be produced? I dunno...

So basically I narrowed it down to. Monitors plugged into furman power conditioner. Turned on with no XLR cables attached = ringing. WEIRD! Could the furman be bad? I barely used any of this gear.

Or maybe its the monitor I have between them causing it? It is a new monitor. Its just weird as ever...
