Hi, Please can you help me, I need some advice and I'm really confused!

I don't know anything about technical stuff. Its for a surprise present for my bf birthday and I need some advice from people who are unbiased and know what they're talking about.
I was going to go with the MAudio NRV10, saw a few complaints about it but thought I'd go with it anyway, when I phoned up to see if it was in stock the guy was really trying to put me off getting one at all and saying that the company keeps not sending them when they say they're going to etc etc. I just left it and researched further cos I wasn't sure if he was just wanting me to buy something else that was in stock or he really thought they weren't good.
Anyway I've come across loads and loads of complaints about the NRV10 not working properly and breaking
and I don't know what to do. Its probably the only time I'll be able to get a big gift like this and I don't want to waste it on something that's not going to work properly or breaks after a year.
I was looking at the Mackie Onyx 1220i, and the 1620i but I'm having trouble understanding all the technical stuff.
I found a review that said there were less inputs but more outputs with the NRV10 but which is it better to have more of? It's to record a rock band if that makes any difference?
Sorry if I'm coming across really thick
but I really need some advice, it's only about a week I've got to decide.
Thanks for any help you can give
PS - Its to work with Pro Tools M-Powered 8
