I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question or if anyone at this site can help but I am desperate. I have a missing teenage son who left a voice mail on my home answering machine. Unfortunately the fax machine was also on at the time he left his message so we can't understand much of what he said. My question is: can the fax noise be filtered out and if so who can I contact locally (Tampa, Florida) to help? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

They are already involved. The detective will not be back until Monday so we are looking for some answers on our own.

It seems to me like it would be possible to filter out the fax. If you dumped the audio from the machine into just about any recording medium, and used a low pass filter, to get rid of the high frequency fax squeal, it seems like you'd be able to hear the voice. I've obviously never tried it, but in theory I think it would work. Just about any studio could handle that.
