I'm putting this into the "newbie" section because as far as recording is concerned that is what I am and am covering a few different areas with my questions.

My gear:
HP Pavillion computer ( this one ) running Suse Linux 10.1.
Software is Audacity and I'm looking at Ardour.
Alesis 8USB mixer connected to the computer by a USB cable (just bought).
2 SM57 microphones with balanced cables and stands [balanced as well I hope :)]

First things first, I'm looking to get the best out of the equipment I've got, not arguments about how I should buy this or that. I've already got MAD (melodeon aquisitive disorder) and others related to music and I really can't afford to develop similar tendencies with recording equipment :-0

Well, not just yet, a pair of monitors would be nice...............

What I want to do is make some decent recordings of myself playing the the melodeon (a type of small button accordeon). These will be partly for demos but also for distributing tunes round friends/band members and making a searchable repository of tune recordings on my website.

I've made some test recordings and they are certainly better than anything I've achieved before, but I'm now looking for some advice about what to do next. The recordings were made with the microphones set up in an XY pattern (at 90 degrees) placed about 1 foot above the instrument.

I've been able to find very little advice on the web about recording melodeons (actually, none at all, just some general accordeon stuff), so I'm wondering about compression, eq, effects etc etc. Also whether I've set up the mics in the best possible way.

Below are links to a couple of rough recordings I've made. They're what I would decribe as "raw" since I've done nothing to them other than trim the ends and they contain some musical mistakes :-/ There may be a bit of computer noise in the backgound as well, but don't worry about that since I'll be getting a longer USB cable and then the computer will be in a different room.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be gratefully received :-)

I uploaded the files to two different places since I had problems getting the second sample onto the first file hosting website. Anyway, the links are below. They are quite large since they are wav files. I've zip compressed them since that's not lossy and almost halves the file size.

Sample 1 - one row 4 stop melodeon (23Mb)
http://ez-files.net/download.php?file=4161f3a3

Sample two - two row Dino Baffetti melodeon (40Mb)

You can see some more info about melodeons at my website:

ecadre--i would love to check out some tunes but i'm to weird about downloading this and that....i've managed to catch a cold far to many times from other sites like this.

sorry, can you upload to a more friendly site like soundclick or myspace?

disclaimer so the elders don't think i'm trying to trash talk..........by no way do i mean that i've cought anything from here nor do i think if that happened would this site condone that kind of behavior

They're wav files, so they can't go on myspace or soundclick anyway.

You won't catch any viruses from me (I'm on Linux) and those seem perfectly legitimate file storage sites.

I could have put them on my server but it doesn't have the bandwith to cope with it, it's on a DSL line.

well, still have to decline the download,,no offense i hope?

can't you reformat to mp3?

thats what i had to do to get my stuff on to soundclips.

Will post again in a little while, my server has gone mad :-(

I haven't compressed into an mp3 because that's not representative of what I'm actually working with.

I've just realised that I've somehow screwed the virtual host settings for the "caela.co.uk" website (good timing eh), but the main server setting is still working.

I've posted the smaller of the two files onto my server (we'll just have to see what happens now!). This is the link.

all i got was a holding page

Sorry, it's there now.

I think I must have accidentally deleted it whilst tying to find out why Apache has decided to trash all my virtual hosts :-/
