Please give me your suggestions

I misunderstood your question.

Didn't realize that you didn't have any preamps at all. :D

That would be a problem.

In any event, as a good, solid mic pre for someone who just does a track at a time in a home studio ... I'd recommend either the M-Audio DMP3, a Rane MS1-B, or a Symetrix 202 or 302 - new or used.

Nope, unfortunately I do not have any pre amps at all! Thank you for your recomendations. I really liked the way that the M-Audio DMP3 seems. Many reviews say that it is a great value. Have you any experience with recording heavy distortion guitars on it?

And an other question. Since I have never performed this setup before, I am unsure of how it connects to my PC. If I went with the M-Audio, does that then go directly into an audio interface, which then goes into the PC? How? And are there recomendations for an audio interface for the DMP3, or would any audio interface be alright?

You guys are a great help, thank you!

Is it possible to connect a pre amp to an audio interface to a PC? How do I do this? Here is what I am considering as a setup. Please tell me what you think!

Thats actually what u'd have to do..its the only way to get the sound into ur pc. I'd personally get the pre, and then get an m-audio delta 0404, in which u'd take the line out on the dmp3 and send it to the line in on the delta. But you just plug ur mic into the pre, send the out on the pre to the in on the interface, and run the interface into ur pc (through firewire/usb/pci..etc)

The interface you're looking at already has built in preamps. If you're planning on that as well as a DMP 3, it's a bit redundant. Something like an M-Audio Delta 44 PCI card might be useful if you think you might need more channels later on, or an E-Mu 0404 PCI if you think you'll only need 2 channels of analog in.

I've never been keen on the USB stuff with the built in pres, but if you're only dealing with a couple of channels it might work okay to go that route. At least it'd be cheap only having to buy the one box, but it'd also be pretty easy to outgrow that thing. I'd also guess the DMP 3 is a much better preamp.

Another thing you might want to consider with the Delta 44 / DMP 3 route is a headphone amp.

Since you're really looking for interface advice, I would ask the question in the computer recording section. Most of the computer nerds hang out in there. :D

lol ty, I will try, but where is the computer recording section? All I see is...

Microphones
The Rack
Guitars and Basses
Keyboards and Sound Modules
Drums and Percussion
Other Equipment and Reviews

Maybe in the rack?

JPXTom, Thank you so much. It may seem trivial, but the way you explained it was exactly what I was looking for. I tried searching for an m-audio delta 0404, but could only find the m-audio 0404 and m-audio delta 66. The 0404 looks nice, but the only benefit I found was phantom power, which the DMP3 has, so I wouldn't need it, right? The delta 66 I would not be able to use because I am not skilled with installing cards into the PC and would be more comfortable working with an external interface for my first time.

snow lizard: Yes, I have thought that using a pre amp with an interface that has preamps would be redundant, but I do not know of any other way to transfer the sound into the PC. The plan was just to use the DMP3's preamp, and just basically use the interface as the method of transfer. I was just hoping that the DMP3 and the preamps of the E-mu0202 will not be too much when combined and make a bad sound.

Is there a better way? Can I use the DMP3 pre amp and get the sound into the PC using a cheaper thing minus PCI? Or is this setup ok? I don't mind being redundant as long as the pre amps will not clash with eachother.

actually you can go straight into your computer from your 57 micing your guitar amp. Just get an xlr cable to 1/8th inch cable. Guitar amp > sm 57 > xlr to 1/8 inch > microphone input on computer.

I've used the microphone input on the computer for songs coming form a basic 12 channel behringer mixer (only 4 actual mic channels) and it sounds decent. I would probably buy a firewire interface that has good pre's, that way you don't have to buy a pre amp then go into the audio interface and then into the computer via firewire or usb etc.... If you can fine just a soundcard (interface) with good pre's than you can just send into your computer... and since your only doing 1 track at a time you could get something like the firewire solo from m-audio (although i haven't heard the greatest things about they're drivers and such) or something for mac like the apogee duet which apparently has great pre-amps

You can't really mess up slotting in a card, and lots of computer cases have nice thumb-screws and stuff nowadays to make it even easier. If not then surely you have a friend who could help you out?

On the other hand, portable interfaces are nice because they can easily be swapped over to laptops for going on the move, etc.

Hi and thank you for responding. I guess 700 is a good limit. so 200-700 I guess is where I am looking. Could you please give me the specific models you would suggest? I am not familiar with any of the brand names. Thank you!

P.S. Yes, I am familiar with the band Underoath. That is very cool to know; thank you for the insight!

In that budget I would suggest an RNP. Bonus is that it is a killer bass DI
