I'm using a TASCAM 2488, but I imagine the question applies more generally.

In addition to the internal effect loop, each of the channels on my 2488 has access to two external effects loops. There are two EFFECT SEND outputs on the rear panel of the 2488.

Now to the "stupid question" part: Where is the effect return?

The 2488 does not have 'insert' effects ability; where you take a signal from the track, effect it, and then return it to that track. You would have to route the FX out from your effect unit to one of the inputs and record it on another track. This would then give you a 'dry' and a 'wet' track, which you add together during final mixdown.

Thanks, Trillian. So the wet and dry are on separate tracks. Then if you wanted to combine them at your preferred wet/dry ratio, you could bounce them both to a third track?

You could do that, or just combine them at what ratio you want during final mixdown. Saves having to do the bounce, unless you're tight on tracks.
