hi
a band i play in was asked to come up with a twenty second song for a compilation of (you guessed it) twenty second songs. we noodled around for a few hours yesterday and came up with what i think is a pretty solid little track. i was just wondering if folks here could shoot me some feedback on the recording and composition..

song is on soundclick at this addy:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=687666&songID=5292814

for reference: tracked everything on a MOTU 896 (which i am about to sell so i can buy back my precious aardvark q10 - MOTU firewire stuff has TERRIBLE connection problems with XP sp2) .. six mics on the drums, 421s on the toms, beyer 88 on the kick, beyer 201 on the snare, one sm81 and one SP B1 OH.. mic'd the gits with a 421 and did a couple tracks of overdubs.. bass is a 6x10 mic'd with an akg 112 and run through an ampeg ba-500 plugin in sonar.

obviously, we had a limited amount of time/space in which to cram a bunch of ideas, so this is pretty minimal, but we're a pretty minimal band to begin with, so it's fairly representative of our overall 'sound'.

thanks for your feedback!

I'm on shitty speakers, but I like the snare sound. Hard for me to judge the mix right now but i'll listen at home.

The song itself is short. I like short songs but not that short. I was totally disapointed when short music for short people came out. I'd love to hear a 1:50 minute version of it.

Cheers!

thanks

thanks polska..
yeah, it is a bit short!
unfortunately, the guy who's doing the compilation only wants twenty second songs.. the trade off is that the comp will have like fifty tracks, so it will still average out to a normal length LP..

i think we're going to rewrite the song into a longer version, so i'll post that when we get around to it.

the drummer in this band has a really tight snare, so it's hard to get it to sound really punchy, but it has a nice crack that reminds me of a lot of older minimal punk stuff (wipers, b52s, etc)

I listened at home, and it sounds good! still love the snare, the bass gets a little lost in the first part but overall Good Job!

Yeah, the mix was allright.. I liked what the bassplayer was doing!.. vocals too.

cool, thanks to ya'll for the feedback...
i always have trouble get this bass into mixes..
my friend plays through a jazz bass into a
sunn colosium powering an ampeg 6x10 cab,
and it's SO goddam bassy that i end up having
to suck out a lot of the body of the sound before
you can even hear the kick or the meat of the
guitars in the mix.. this time i ran his signal through
a plugin to simulate an ampeg ba-500, and that
seemed to help clean up the boominess without
taking away too much of the bass frequencies..
i think part of it is that he's playin really broken basslines in
the first half of the song and up high in the second half..
anyhow, i'll mess with it! thanks again polska/jouni for your help
