Hello,

Today I recorded a girl who did an evanescense cover over the song My Immortal...I would like critiquing mostly on the vocals since the background is just the instrumental

I used a digi 002 rack and a Audio-Technica AT3035

Currently the main vocal layer has not been eqed yet...I am waiting for suggestions on what i should do to eq it....I have just compressed it

The background layers were compressed and hi passed at 400 hz and then the mids cut a bit and highs boosted with a high shelfing eq at around 9 khz

Please critique and be honest...also give me some suggestions please on the main vocal layer what I should do for eqing and stuff

Thank You,

To me, she has a very good voice, and you seemed to capture it well. It sounds very natural. I personally don't know that I'd do anything to it, in this format. With the little bit of music, the full, rich voice sounds pretty good.

The one thing i noticed when my band was looking for a (fem.) vocalist, is that their Amy Lee interpretations were almost spot-on except for one thing:

POWER!

Amy Lee has a beautiful angelic voice but you have to understand that she has an incredible amount of power pushing it! The (many) girls that came in for auditions all requested that we do "My Immortal" - "Hello" or that other *wake me up* song and they each had beautiful voices but seemed to have lacked in power and projection.

The vocalist here clearly has a really pretty voice; but she seems to be lacking in the *power* that I'm trying to elaborate on which is kind of allowing her vocals to be a bit pitchy in between note shifts and words as well as having an almost uncontrollable vibrato effect.

Absolutely gorgeous voice but if she wants to continue to emulate Amy Lee, tell her to take vocal lessons religiously! Then again, You can't teach a turtle to jump eh!
