Hi guys,

On the weekend a high school friend of mine came over and we had some fun recording a song of his.
It's a very simple recording using just 2 mics of him singing+ playing the guitar.
I won't give off the details of the equipments/processing just yet as I just want some quick critics on how it sounds first, especially the guitar.

Thanks for your time!

English not his first language? Not understanding a bunch of it. Maybe he just doesn't enunciate well.

Anyway, much to do with editing of vocal levels. Then compression. It needs some manual editing, before compression. Many points, where the vocal jumps out.

Guitar could use a bit of work. Without knowing how you recorded it, I can't give much advice. Sounds like there was not much processing going on yet, though the guitars sounded mono, but yet something added to create a stereo image. Was that two mics, or an effect? Either way, sounds a bit plain to my ears. I could just be an ass though. :)

Singer guy needs to work on his pitch as well. Not so good throughout... Ok, yeah, I'm an honest ass.

Thank you so much for the reply.

English is my friend's first language but that's just his style I guess. I do understand that he needs a lot of work on his vocals but as a friend, I hate to judge. I will say however he doesn't have the best mic techniques and sings with a extremely high larynx, but this is just 1 take with zero editing/practice.
In terms of processing, I haven't compressed anything yet. Just a slight reverb on the vocal and a same simple EQ on both tracks. There is no panning at all.
Mic 1 is a cardioid on the vocal and mic 2 is a hyper cardioid (odd choice I know but only mic available) pointed at the 12th fret of the guitar.
Distance wise they're about the same.
The room is a non-treated common rectangular room with possibly the worst flutter echo ever! However I'm not sure if it translated onto the recording or not.
Equipment wise, I used a Joly modded MK219 on the vocal and a gefell M910 for the guitar. Everything else is so low end that its not even worth mentioning (including the $100 dollar guitar).

I'm more interested in improving the acoustic guitar's sound, just like how you said it sounded a bit plain, how do I make it more exciting with just 1 mic? Being a non-guitar player myself, it's hard to judge whether it sounds right or not so any hints/tips will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a live recording of a guy in an echoey room with an acoustic guitar and a couple of mics - which I assume is what it is.

If you want specific tips on how to improve just about anything then I suggest you go and read up big time on all the information in the newbie and recording tips forums. If you're trying to make quality recordings you've got a bit of work to do on lots of stuff, as does the singer...

Good luck

As a recording, it's okay. The bigger problem is the guitar and the player. The guitar doesn't sound very good and it's badly played. The singer needs some control, as well. The song isn't so hot, either. I'd like to hear something you recorded when it was worth recording.
