Hey macle-de-mac. Thanks for the info - follow on questions - I guess you mean paris plate reverb, and by decay you mean .7 reverb time? Also how close to the mic do you get, and do you feel like you are belting it out, or singing softly, or somewhere in the middle. Do you sing above the capsule, straight into it, or have it upside down - above you and sing below the capsule? When using compression do you just shave off the tops, or hit it a bit harder. Sorry for the third degree :-)

Whoops, yeah, I meant plate reverb, and decay meant reverb time. On this song, I was probably about 6 inches away, and singing pretty softly straight into the capsule, definitely not belting it out. The compression was a pretty decent amount, I think probably 7-10 db of gain reduction, and I set the Fairchild plug on "1" which I think is a fast attack and really fast release.

Unfortunately I know what the other dude meant by Pastiche. It generally means that a work is so stylistically similar, derivative, or imitative of another artists work that it ceases to have a life of it's own (aka not 'real'). I DON'T AGREE with the comment.

Hmmmm, yeah, I don't agree either!

Here's a song which is not quite as Beatley, although it is kind of, and I guess it's pretty derivative in general, but it sort of sums up how I feel about that topic, and pretty much everything else. :)

Fuck That Shit

Thanks for the vocal info. I freaking love this song. Great job. What's the story with the bass and drums? Bass sound is killer. Did you play the sax on this? Once again - stellar production.

By pastiche I was suggesting that it sounded like you'd decided to record a song in the style of... Now the song is great, the recording & playing is terrific but it sounds too Beatle like to me. The Rutles (Mr Innes & Co) wrote and recorded some excellent tunes in the Beatles various styles/instrumentation phases. They did it to be funny, clever and to pay hommage. They wrote great stuff but it lacked clout because of the stylistic similarity.
I think your song is great: I wasn't slagging it off - commenting/giving an opinion is all!

As someone else mentioned, nice fullness and warmth. Great job.

Thanks Chuck! I did that one a while ago, so I don't recall what I did with the bass and drums. I usually record the bass direct in. I could check on whatever EQ and compression I did. The drums were probably simply recorded, although I try different mic placements all the time. Yeah, that's me playing the sax. I got one from China on ebay, and learned enough to play simple parts. There's banjo on this one, too. Not to mention kazoo.

Thanks again, very much, I really appreciate it!

Really nice work, M (as usual) - I too liked the interesting chord changes.

I liked "Fuck that Shit", too ... it spoke to me. :)

I can't get enough of "Fuck that Shit". I still gotta share it with my old bandmates. It's crazy how one guy can play more intruments mo better than my entire former band, *and* record and mix the stuff better than any studio we ever recorded in.

Wow Chuck, you are too kind.

What are you recording on now, btw? Weren't you making plugins for Paris?

Out of curiosity, can you (or anyone else out there) here an overall sound difference in these 2 songs? I realize they're pretty different songs, but aside from that, I feel that there is a general overall quality that is also different and I think it's the DAW and/or the converters (one's Paris and one isn't).

Thanks again, very much.

Man I'm glad I ducked back into this thread. I almost missed Fuck That Shit. Sweet Jesus, that kicked my ass! KILLER tunage. I got my eye on you.:D

Well I think you already gave away the answer to me - but honestly I would have no idea - any differences I hear i would chalk up to the different styles of the songs.

I use cubase for the past few years - but to be honest I didn't record much between 2000 and 2010 cause I was busy renovating a 100 year old house, running a consulting company, raising three kids, taking care of a couple misfit dogs, yada yada yada..

I was making plugins for paris. Back in 2003 or so I managed to get through to EMU and they licensed all the Ensoniq paris code stuff to me for a dollar. Still don't know how I pulled that off. I ported a bunch of effects over from the DP/PRO, ASRX, FIZMO, etc. After I packed it in a guy named Mike Audet picked up where I left of. He has tons of paris plugs available at www dot ensoniq ca. He also is wrapping up 64bit Windows 7 drivers believe it or not.

Anyway - take care and keep it up.

Yeah, I guess I did give it away. You've been busy! It's amazing that they keep Paris going, but there does seem something about it to me.

Thanks a lot for all the kind words!

Love listening to your stuff, the kind words come naturally :-)

I'm working on a bunch of different crap right now - backlog of about 50 or so tunes in various states of completion. I guess I'll post some here as I get closer. I'm kinda tired of my sucky/shitty recordings though - can't seem to make the next quality leap as I never have enough time to focus.

Take it easy
