Mr. Moon

Force of Naked
The final mix of my tune "War13" is posted. I would appreciate any and all comments regarding the song itself, the arrangement, the performances, and most of all the mix.

War13: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/mrmoonmusic.htm

While you're at the site, check out my acoustic intrumental demo "Charity" and let me know what you think about it. This tune is still very much a rough demo, final recording will be starting soon.

Thanks!

I like the tune. Nice sound overall.

i hear a warbly sound in it though....something in the high end. Tracks bleeding onto each other somewhere maybe? I'm no pro, but that's the best I can describe it.

But like I said, good tune.

Thanks Scott,

I appreciate the comments. I don't know what the "warbly" sound is, but I've also noticed it sometimes when I stream from Soundclick, rather than download the mp3 file. I will look into this a bit more.... Maybe the mp3 was encoded badly from the original .wav file?

Thanks for the feedback. Let me know if I can return the favor sometime!

War 13 - On my end I had trouble making out the bass, but it could be my computer. I like the vocals and the playing was good.

I guess my only feedback would be to bring out the bass a bit since the drums sit pretty loud in the mix. :)

I also listened to Charity...

I have to say that I like this one better. Maybe it is just the acoustic nature of the song, but it sounds more inspired. It will be good to hear this one with the vocals (if you have any) on there. It has a good flow to it. :)

Thanks for the feedback boydrj!

War13: On my work computer I have the same lack of bass guitar, but on every other system I listen to it on, the bass guitar is very noticable in the mix. The bass I used to record with was a real POS, and it didn't track as well as I had hoped. Since then, I have purchased a new bass (5 string US Masters) and bass preamp (ART MP), both of which kick butt over what I used to record this tune originally.

Charity: I spent hardly any time mixing this tune; I just recorded the guitar tracks in less than an hour, panned them a bit, using no effects, and exported it to audio, so it was much more spontanious than War13. ...Maybe part of it too is that I'm learning how to use my gear a bit better and can get some decent tracks without having to spend as much time"fixing" them...

Anywho, thanks for the comments!

Anyone else?

Cooooollll

I like the guitar sound and vocal FX

My only take would be to bring the drums up big time. The guitar overpowers everything. This type of tune should have a Kick and snare slapping your belly. Bass guitar too, but you already mentioned that.

Nice Job........

Like the lyrics, but the whole mix sounds like it was recorded it thirty different spaces... the different reverbs really make this sound like a bunch of tracks shoved together

Assign some of those tracks to a bus-> I really think it would benefit your tune to have it sound like all the musicians are in the same room

Especially the rhythm guitars in the beginning...

Like the drums sound too, but same issues with verb

Cool song- keep it up!

jake-owa, are you out there anywhere?

I would like to get some feedback from you on the mix of this tune, as you really helped me out the first time I posted it a while back. I would really like to hear some comments from you now that I've got the mix done.

Thanks!

Hey man, I emailed ya. I would love to critique the mix but I can't get soundclick to stream. Try a temp Nowhereradio account and I'm game.

Waiting...

D@mn Soundclick!!!!

Ok, I will put together a Nowhereradio site tomorrow AM, and get it posted for you to check out. I would do it now, but I'm off to bed, have to wake up in about 7 hours and get to work to be able to pay for all the gear... :)

Hey 5150, thanks! (I used to play through a 5150 when I was doing the gigging thing, ...I really miss that amp!)

All the guitars (except the bass) were recorded through my Trademark 10 amp. (http://www.tech21nyc.com/TM10.html) Yup, that's 10, ...count 'em 10, whole blistering watts of power you're hearing!! I close-mic'd with an SM-57, and on one track I had an ambient mic (Cascade M-20) about 2 or 3 feet back from the front of the amp. Since recording the tune a few months ago, I've picked up a couple of new mics (including a Studio Projects C1), more techniques, and such that are helping me get even better sounds out of the thing. Hopefully, I'll be getting some of the new tunes posted with the updated guitar tone (just have to find a vocalist to work with...)

I recorded the tracks with the amp's reverb turned *OFF* and no other effects whatsoever, except for the overdrive. I like to record dry and add effects from that point during mixing in Sonar 2.2.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the amp. I love it!! Any other questions are welcomed as well, not just ones about the amp... :)

Thanks again for the feedback!

Ok mr. Moon, here we go:

First off the guitar tones sound good. the main vox sound a bit dull or mid-treble shy, they could also stand to come up a tiny bit in vol.

In my estimation the weakest part of the mix is the phasey backup vox. I don't mind the res sweep but I would like to hear it a bit lower in the frequency spectrum. I don't think it helps the impact of the vox to have it sort of give out and lose "omph" in those passages. It gets too tinny.

I've heard this on three different monitoring setups and I think the mix is really starting to kick. It seems to lose a lot of bass on my m8s but the low end kicks on my studio monitors. The head phone listen is the most revealing as far as the backup vox go.

Sounds like you're almost there.

I love my Trademark 10 too.

:D

That amp sounds amazing...
It definitely sounds better than it looks...:)

I just picked up one of those new little Roland cube 15 practice amps, man that baby kicks ass...
It has tons of distortion... nice and thick..
The "metal" setting is awesome...
$95.00 bucks...:)
