I took my broken guitar to yet another shop, and at least this guy was honest. He didn't know what he was talking about (was referring to the bridge as the 'pickup' ). Anyway, he said the repair man was on vacation and they don't even do repairs like that anyway.

So...I messed around with a couple cheap-o guitars there. I picked up an Ibanez PF acoustic. Wasn't expecting anything (all Ibanez acoustics I played sounded bad). But it sounded better than the $800 Washburn I had my eyes set on the past few weeks. And the good thing is, it only costs $285. I'm still kind of shocked. I've played a lot of cheap-os that sounded 'okay' but this one stood out.

Anyway, it was not an acoustic/electric, it was just an acoustic. And I can't seem to find it on Musicians Friend or other websites. It was not a cutaway. It was a dark maroon color. I'm just trying to find it so I can get more info on it. I'd probably know it if I saw it.

Anyone ever seen or played one like this? Or know where I can find it? I didn't even see it on the Ibanez website.

ibanez pf models are one of their cheapo series but they do have a massive top and sound really nice.

however : the non-cutaway non-electric version sold for less then $250 here in europe and guitars tend to be cheaper on your side of the atlantic so i find $285 a bit steep.

he referred to the bridge as 'pick up' hey?

:D :D :D

In one sense he was right because I believe the guitar your talking about has an under saddle piezo?? Anyway. If the guitar feels good to you then its a good guitar as long as it is sound and plays in tune. Ibanez usually are. There are a few models within the Ibanez PF range and they are also introducing new ones. They now do non dred models. Which model and spec are you looking at? For more info just googe "ibanez pf acoustic" or their own site has THIS. Not exactly detailed so maybe go to their forum and post there. Someone may have some info for you.

One thing for certain at that price if it suits you then you can't go wrong. If and when you are ready to move on to something better/different you will have lost very little. Ibanez have a very good reputation at that end of the market.

Re reading your post and thinking about it some more are you sure it was a PF series? From memory they all have on board pickups.

I should have written down the model # or something while I was there. I may go back today to do that.

I tried the Ibanez site before but it's not listed in the PF section. I didn't spend much time looking at it so maybe I missed the input jack but there was definitely no EQ or volume knob like on most acoustic/electrics I've seen. And it definitely wasn't a cutaway.

I really hope it's still there by the time I have the money, which shouldn't be too long. I'm going to try and put it on Layaway soon.

Can't you put a good will deposit down if your that sure it's for you? The lack of electrics is what made me think it might not be PF series. Then again it could be. I always thought that the PF's were electro cutaway. Maybe some of the earlier ones wern't? If its right for you though that doesn't really matter does it :)

Seems they did do a non cutaway at some point. There is one listed on Craigslist now. There are also a few on ebay as well. Google is your friend ;)

I assisted my brother & sis-in-law buying an acoustic guitar a couple of years ago. We were looking in the $400 range, and ended up buying an Ibanez for right around $300...I don't remember the model, though. No electronics, but it was as good or better than any other sub-$700 guitars we played.

It kinda surprised me, because when I think acoustic, I don't think Ibanez.

That could be it, not sure. I'm going back there today to possibly look @ the model #.

al i already said : 285 just is too expensive.

Why? It sounds better than the $850 Washburn I played (which sounded amazing, and I'm really picky).

Same here. I've tried a few in the past but pretty much gave up after that because I figured they just didn't produce that good of acoustics.

Once/if I get it I hope to post some clips.

Nope the body didn't look like that.

PFs are bottom of the line imports.... you can do waaaaaaaaaay better for just a little more cash. Also, beware that all the Ibanez are strung from the factory w/ EXPs, so when you A/B them next to other makes/models, you get this really hyped bright sound that most people ears interperate as "better". If you go back in, check out the fret finishing really closely and you will almost certainly notice rough spots and sharp edges.

Ibanez has some killer midline models, but Im not too impressed with the PFs. Also, the cool little onboard tuner/preamp has become pretty standard now,so dont let that sway you to the PF.

do a search here and will certainly find lots of post about the "Best sounding Import guitars under $400".

Most importantly....... not sure what your financial sittuation is, but if its an issue of a couple hundred bucks to get a guitar thats going to inspire you for many years to come, as opposed to "settling" on an OK import, you know what the right move will be!

Money is real tight right now and I really don't have much of a choice but to settle with what I can get. I'm at least happy that the low-end one I found actually sounds good.

When I can save up more money I'm definitely going to buy one that will last awhile. But as of now I don't even have one so I can't play or record anything. :(

Your Cortez is totally unplayable? Bummer!

Didnt mean to be a snob about the PFs..... before ya make the leap, check your pawnshops and Craigslist to see what else is out there!

GL Freind!!!!!!!

I had a cortez les paul copy when I was 15. Everyone wanted it as it looked just like Jimmy Page's. I wasn't all that advanced, but some guy's in thier 30's back then said it sounded tits.

Anyway does the Ibanez have a solid spruce top or laminated?

Just got back, gonna leave to school soon so don't have the time to look it up, I will when I get home.

After playing it again, this time, with no one else in the shop, I could really hear how it sounds. Not as good as I thought before but I'd still be happy with it I guess. It was still better than the $500+ ones they had there.

Anyway, the model # I wrote down is: PF-15 TRS 140-33. I think the 140-33 part is right not sure.

Anyway, it's definitely not an acoustic/electric and it's definitely not a cutaway.

It has a good overall tone, and a pretty nice bass sound to it unlike my other one (which completely lacked bass) but there is still a 'cheaper' quality to the sound, I guess for obvious reasons. It's hard to tell how it would sound on record.

You know, for a little over $400 you can pick up a Big Baby. Buffalo Bros has a used 2002 for $340 on their website.

They are selling the new Guild GA 30 OM for $550--all solid wood.

Both of these guits will hold their value pretty well. You will get less than half what you pay for that Ibanez.

SPAM WARNING

Buffalo Bros also has a 100% Trade-up policy. You can read about it on their site. I have utilized it five times over the past decade. It's the real deal.

Looks good but I have no idea how it sounds. :p It looks like it'd sound good but I just don't feel good about buying an acoustic over the internet.

The shops around here suck so bad...not only because how they repair (break) guitars but they have a poor selection. Usually just 3 different brands, but a lot of the same cheap/crap. And then a short selection of the (really) expensive ones that are $1,000+ that still have nothing about their sound that is worthwhile.

They also have a 48 hour approval period.

Travel down to BHam or find a college town where the pawn shops are ripe! Good time of the year for college town pawn shops(even though ebay has screwed that up!)
