I am after some advice on buying an eight channel mixer fir playback in the rehearsal room. Something small and cheap would be ideal . Do those Line Mixers do the job that I need?

No - not at all. You could get a Behringer Xenyk X2222 used for $170.

If you are talking about playback of a line level device and don't need anything other than gain and pan on each input, a line mixer will do fine.
