I've been bitten by the "cassette multitrack bug". I'm a way bigger fan of any Analog Tascam machines (but I do love my Fostex R8's) but I bought this Older Fostex 260 multitracker cause I think it looks cool. Lately I've been buying all these "fixer-uper" multitrack machines off of ebay. Most I've gotten super cheap and I've figured out the problems and fixed most. The one thing I've heard about and it seems to be a typical problem.... The tape will roll for about 20 to 30 seconds and then stop. Anyways, the Fostex 260 multitracker .......this is what's happening with it. I took it apart and the drive belt was super loose and stretched out, so I know I need a new one for sure (Wish me luck finding one, cuz I know Fostex parts sure as hell ain't gonna have it.) And even if I replaced the drive belt I don't think this would fix the problem. I took the belt off completely and shut the machine down, Turned it back on and pressed play. The play button engages the motor but then after a few seconds it (the motor) still stops. I know the belt is crucial because it keeps the capstan turning, but the motor should keep spinning even if it has no belt, right? Has this happened to anyone with any of your machines? Doe's anyone know what this could be? I love taking crap apart and fixing it, and if I can't fix it, then I at least learn how it works.....But this is boggling my brain. Anybody got any suggestions?(....other than "Throw it away, Man!" Ha.) Arghhhhhh. I think I'm insane..........

I would venture a guess...maybe a bad relay. Does the motor have any torque upon starting?
