Hi,I have a 1985 American Standard Strat..... I've been thinking a lot lately that more of a Les Paul sound would better suit my music. Can I approximate the sound w/different pickups in my axe, or am I dreaming? My real problem is that Les Pauls are too damn expensive.....Can't cut food out of my budget at this time....Also,am I correct in thinking that Epiphone Les Pauls are garbage? My wife says I'm too old to play with garbage. Thanks, M.

Single coil sized humbuckers will get you fairly close, or if anything make the strat a little less thin sounding (asuming it's all 3 single coils right now)

you should look into the 'seymore duncan' range of pickups.

they sell humber pickups in single coil size, which means know chopping up your axe (with an axe).

two models to definetly check out.

seymore duncan 'HOT RAILS' these are a high output humbucker purposely made to slot into a strat. they come in neck, middle, and bridge position. they provide a wider output and sustain and suit rockier music.

semore duncan 'little 59' this to is a humbucker that slots into a strat. its based on the classic gibson 59 pickup. its designed to give that classy gibo tone and sustain. it has great dynamics and is pick sensetive. although i think its only available in the bridge position.

you can always mix and match hotrails (neck and middle) and a little 59 in the bridge. you could just add a bridge hotrails or a little 59 so you can get stratty and gibo tones. one problem with this however is, as they are humbuckers they have a distinctive higher output, this can cause problems in bein either to quiet or to loud when changing pickups during a song. unless you have good control over your volume pots or volume pedal.

the price for these is roughly £74.95 each (dont know in dollars, im english). you may want to pay extra for a guitar tech to load them up for you. you could do it yourself but depending on your pickup configuration, you may need resistors and capacitors added to match ohmage.

hope this helps.

Dean, thanks bloke!! That's the kind of info I was hoping for....
Good details....... I will definitely check it out.

The little 59 is available in neck position also. The hot rails are too muddy for the neck in my opinion.

Hey,guitarist.. Would you recommend three 59's or a mix'n'match?
This is definitely going to be more affordable than a new'Paul.
THanks....M.

I've got 59's in the neck and bridge but in the middle I put a vintage rails. That way I can still get strat sounds from the notch and middle positions. Otherwise if you dont mind the hum from the single coils, theres probably no reason to replace the middle pickup at all.
