1) It doesn't take big bucks to PLAY a guitar.
2) How am I supposed to shell out $400 for a guitar I can't even find?

You don't know anything about a guitar until you've giged with it a few times. This forum is for us to shear our personal experiences with gear we've used, not what we've read on Ed Roman's web site.

When I played the UM-4 it didn't sustain all that well. It felt kinda stiff and unnatural. One of the cuts in the body was pretty bad and I couldn't get a decent jazz tone out of the thing.

Now I know that you never played an Ultramatic!
You're 100% wrong, dude.
I know, because I own one and you have no clue what saying here. It has a GREAT Jazz tone and the neck is super fast and smooth as butta, baby!
Look at the Harmony Central reviews I posted one more time (...if you even bothered to read them in the first place).
The Ultramatic was PRAISED for it's great Jazz tone and sustain by players with 20+ years of playing experience.

I think you're confused and played something else, but it wasn't a UM-4.

Still not convinced?
Need more "proof"????

Check out the below posted website, where this man knows EXACTLY what he's talking about when it comes to guitars. The whole site is loaded with "cut-to-the-chase" EDUCATED commentary. Read what he has to say about American-made PRS guitars, Korean-made PRS guitars, and Samick PRS copies.
In a nutshell, he says that the Korean-made PRS guitars (manufactured under the name Dillion Guitars) are better than the high-priced American-made PRS's. Then, under Samick, the last two sentences say that the Samick-made PRS copies (UM-4) are better than the Dillion PRS copies when you swap out the pickups, as I originally suggested.
So if you can figure out the math, that means a Samick Greg Bennett Ultramatic UM-4 is a better guitar than a new American-made PRS that costs 3 times the price.
Read it here.....

More proof?

Check out the Harmony Central ratings and reviews about the Quicksilver...

Now check the ratings and reviews on the Ultramatic UM-4...

Did you notice that the Ultramatic beat the Quicksilver in EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY?

I don't make this stuff up.
I actually OWN the product I'm talking about and post facts to back my statements.

64Firebird is absolutely right!
Post stuff that's based on experience and facts, not pictures and fluff. Then maybe, just "maybe", you'll get more respect when you post something.

if i were to look for quality in a newer maker, i would take a new schecter, samick, or godin in the chosen guitar type long before almost any of the bigger, older names. for a grand, you can stomp all over most other electrics with models from any of these 3, in my opinion. i remember checking out a godin with dual humbuckers (or was it some combo of singles with humbucker at the bridge, i think there were both) with these SWEET bridge saddle transducers for a more acoustic tone. beautiful, translucent or natural finishes. samick has insane deals on all kinds of guitars. i prefer shecter on new basses on the whole, i think. all are well within your price point.

What the heck.........???

Anyone else been experienced extreme difficulty with the BBS this week?

I can never seem to log on or post without trying several times.

This site has been complete doo-doo all week long.

It's not just you. ;)

BTW, I figured you'd dismiss the Samick UM-4 suggestion based on Samick's reputation as an "el cheapo" manufacturer.
It's too bad that most people feel this way without giving the new Greg Bennett line of guitars a try.
They really are killer geetars for the money! :)

Man, Buck, who the hell sells Samick? I can't find them at any of the usual online retailer suspects. If they're that cheap and that good, I'm intrigued... I know I really liked the Schecter C1-Plus, which Is probably from the same place...

Oh, I didn't dismiss it. In fact I read both the Quicksilver and the Ultramatic reviews you linked to, and then went to the Samick site and checked them out. I am intrigued, but I'm not certain where I could find one to play. Coming to Seattle again this Christmas?

I wouldn't even consider a Quicksilver though. I would never buy anything from Ed Roman. I've never met or even talked to him, but the evidences of his personality that he offers on his website are enough to scare me away, no matter how much he says he knows about guitars.

Will Guitar Center have them? I think I'll head down there tomorrow. I'm anxious to play a Brian Moore too.

I've actually played the Ultramatic and I didn't like it. I played it for a half an hour not just a few seconds and I didn't like it. Is it that hard to believe?

And about Ed Roman, don't buy through him if you don't want to. Don't dismiss the guitars just because Ed is an asshole.

BTW my name might be TheGuitarMan, but I never claimed to be an expert. It was just the first thing that came to mind.

I'll be in Seattle for the entire week of Thanksgiving, from Sunday (the 24th) to Monday (Dec 2nd).

I'm going to bring one of my acoustics with me (...as I always do) and play at an open mic night somewhere. I found a great link that lists alot of cool places to play...

It would be great to hook up and jam if you've got the time. :)

I was just guitar hunting in N'orlins and ended up getting another strat, only this one is Roland ready which has all the standard features of a strat plus a Roland GK-2A pickup system factory installed. With the GK-2A, you can drive GK-2A compatible products right from the guitar's on-board controls which after using for awhile I have to say it's pretty incredible. Give one a try, it's worth it.

Any opinions/ experience with Brian Moore guitars?

Aaron
http://www.voodoovibe.com

I tried out a few Brian Moore guitars and they played very well and sounded great too. The ones I payed had the patch cord input high up on the back of the guitar.

I wouldn't buy one just because they are not my style of guitar (I don't care for quilted maple) but if you like those really fancy looking guitars I'd say that you could do a lot worse for the money.

Build your own frankein-strat

One of the best guitars I ever had was a totally reworked squire strat. It came with a Bass wood body, which is similar to alder, so I had a decent starting point. Over time I added a birds eye maple neck with jumbo frets, a Floyd Rose, a "stacked" hotrail in the bridge position., some new electronics etc...

The guitar was awesome, very bright and smooth, always stayed in tune, etc...

I'm not saying buy a shitty strat and fix it up, or use a Floyd Rose, that's just how mine turned out. But if you want something new and different consider piece mealing a one off.

Also, if you want to swap something out later to try something new, you won't fell like you're defacing a handmade guitar.

Just a thought

Doug
