Hi gang! :)

Just looking to add a few more models to the https://homerecording.com/bbs/gener...-only/tascam-wallpaper-294178/13/#post4070282 thread and was wondering if anyone has a TEAC 3340S in decent shape and who also owns a half decent digital camera and could take a nice clear shot of it?

Believe it or not, there's virtually no decent, head on images of this classic deck on the net as all of them are either too small, shot at awkward angles, shot in poor light or shot too close which causes a fisheye effect that looks cheesy.

What I'm looking for here is a head on, centered, level shot taken without a flash and where you're about 6 to 10 feet back so that you're zooming in, in order to fill up the image frame with the recorder. If you have a tripod for your camera, that would also help at getting a non-blurred image where you can set up the right height with the camera dead level. If you've seen other picks of the decks in that thread, you'll hopefully know what kind of image I'm after here.

If anyone here could do that and either just post the full sized, original image to this thread or email it to me, that would be really nice of you and of course, be given credit in the wallpaper thread for taking the original picture. Regular daylight would be best or defused, (shaded) incandescent light is also OK so long as there's no hard, dark shadows on the deck.

Cheers! :)

I have a 3340S, but a crap camera, I will see if I can organise something later this week. It was my first multitrack, I could not bring myself to sell it, also have the dolby unit (the one with the 4 VU meters on the front) and a remote (the cable hangs out a bit).

Alan.

Cool! :)

I'll look forward to seeing what you can come up with!

What kind of camera is it? Is it the same one you used for the ATR-60-16 shot a few years back?

Cheers! :)

Power on or power off?

Power on, reels off, remote not necessary.

One with the reels on might also be cool if you have a matched set of reels that can be turned to the same spot so that they are balanced looking.

Thanks in advance! :)

you should link him to your Tascam Wallpaper thread so he can see what you have been doing.

You would think, but Technoplayer.... 10 years and only 400-some odd posts. Not quite a regular. It's cool you're helping out Techno. No offense intended, just trying to help out.

Tried a few test shots last night...bad lighting and the glare on the stainless upper panel is tough. I'm gonna have to move the machine to a different location to get a more indirect/diffuse light. I have matched ampex or blank reels I can mount up for the alternate shots.

>>>either remind me how to upload big files, or PM me with a location I can upload or send them to. My memory on picture loading (and a lot of other things) hasnt survived...

The glare off the upper panel is definitely a tough problem to deal with, even for experienced photographers because you're not just dealing with finding defused light sources but also dealing with photographing something which is very close to being a mirror. What I have discovered to help is to shoot with a dark coloured blanket held up via gobos or by hand if your camera is on a tripod, positioned to that it is between you and your camera and the recorder with a small opening cut into the fabric which you can use to shoot through. And if done properly, the brushed aluminum surface of the deck will only be seeing that dark blanket instead of any and all bright objects which would normally show up as distorted reflections on the deck's surface.

Having said all that, it is also possible for me, in Photoshop to minimize those reflective issues so you needn't worry that your image has to be perfect as I can fix up many issues in post processing.

About the reels, I guess I'd prefer the blank reels as apposed to the Ampex ones only because I find the Ampex reels to look too boring. Then again, some blank reels look pretty boring too! That's why I suggested doing both, just in case one looks better then the other.

About image uploads:

When you're composing a response, just like I'm doing right now, there's a "insert image" picture button where you have the opportunity to either upload your photo from your computer at whatever size it is direct to this thread or if you prefer, you can email it to me at jeffpeletz "at" sympatico.ca The "at" is meant to be replaced with the @ symbol.

About your test shots you took last night, post up one or two of them so that I can get an idea of how good or bad they are. I ask this because as I said earlier, I can fix many issues in post that you may not be aware of and are perhaps writing off an otherwise fixable image by me.

Anything else? Ask away! :)

Cheers! :)

I also have one ...... I'll get wifey to take a few shots when she gets home tonight.

Cool!

Hopefully between everyone giving this a whirl, we're bound to come up with some decent shots!

Cheers! :)
