Phantom power

How do condenser mics that require exactly 48 Volts (No more, no less) of phantom power, to a slightly lower or higher voltage? Don't they work at all or do they work with less performance? For example the OKTAVAs will handle anything from 9-52 volts, and some mixers only provide 12 volts or something like that. This means that mics, pres or mixers aren't always compatible with each other. So sad, so sad....

The simple answer is, some mics are more picky than others, and you have to answer the question on a case-by-case basis. Usually, low phantom power reduces headroom, and it may be helpful to use the pad on the mic if it has one, and increase gain at the board. This will, however, increase your noise floor. You have to listen, and decide if it's worth it.-Richie

If you look at the specifications in enough detail you will see 48V +/- 4V.

I am guessing that too much would run a serious chance of burning out components and too little would get you weak and inconsistent response.
