i'm looking to get a condenser mic for vocals and phantom power what is it?i have a fostex dmt-8 track hard drive recorder,i dont think i have phantom power on it,how do i get it.do i have to buy a special box for it?also whats a good condenser mic for vocals that i can buy below four hundred?

phantom power is in laymans terms, simulated mic pre amp power. it lets ones condensor operate with a conditioned power source. If you do not have it, the special bow you need is simply called a mic pre amp.

I have a condensor mic, that requires 48 volts DC to work....(phantom power) I have been considering trying to make a simple box and connecting 5 or 6, 9 volt batterys in series to provide phantom power. Has anyone out there tried this?

My big board has phantom power but I would like a portable 48 volt box.

Sincerely;
Dom Franco

Rolls makes the PB-223 which delivers 2 channels of phantom power. $59 @ musicemporium.com

Dom, as you can see by the replies to your question, you will have to buy some kind of power supply to get your 48 volts phantom power....59.00 is about as cheap as you can find..on the market, unless you can find someone who can help you make a clean 48 volt supply...I would recommend the ham radio guys in your town...find one ..they can usually build simple stuff like that....cheap too....try it..call local electronic store (radio shack) for a ham in your area......Mike
