Phantom Power

Hey guys, this may soundlike a stupid question..
but it there a "proper" way to turn on phantom power when using a condensor mic? for example -- do i plug the mic in and then turn phantom power on, OR do i turn phantom power on and then plug in the mic?

You connect the mic first, turn down all level controls (or mute the channel), then turn phantom power on.
