Most mixers claim to supply 48V of Phantom power. How common is it for the reading to be below 48V? How low is too low and in what way will it affect the sound?

I am asking because I took my mix console to a tech (for an unrelated problem) and he just happened to bring up when checking some things that it was only showing 32V (I believe) on the Phantom Power.

He didn't present it as a problem but I was curious how common/often this is the case? This is a Soundtracs Solo console, not a cheapier Behringer or anything.

I only recently noticed that my mackie 808m is only supplying 15v phantom....

explains a lot, this in addition to crappy pre's...

wow man Im going to guess that 15v isn't doing much for the sound of condensor mics? Do you think yours was stock like that or its got something wrong with it?

I think a lot of condeners can run decently at lower power, but wont be as optimal. I dont really know much about acceptable tolerances for output voltage, but I do believe that somewhat of a swing is acceptable and accounted for somewhat in the equipment.

15v does seem like a bit of an anomoly in a "48v" system.

15 volts is stock on Mackie powered mixers. This plus some (many) others is why I bought a Peavey.

So I suppose 32V is not a bad thing then in comparison to a mackie lol.
